The board and card games mentioned in “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” by Maxine Foti

Written by Mermaid Seraphine

The most memorable game from “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” is probably “Who holds the paperweight is a sponge.” If you remember right, Jet Mir’s sisters were playing it in one of the novel’s chapters.

Jokes apart, this article can help you remind yourself of the games played in the first novel of the series. Who knows, maybe some will be useful for your home party? Let us know in the comment section below!

AFRICAN / ARABIAN GAME OF MANCALA

Mancala seems to be a popular game in the mermaids’ world. Amelia and Jet Mir both mentioned it as one of their hobbies. But they’re not the only ones: the prisoners from the Mausoleum of Lost Symphonies played mancala, too.

Mancala is a game which has been around for centuries. It has been played for centuries in Africa and Asia, and is now becoming popular in the West. It is played with a board and a collection of small stones. The object of the game is to collect as many stones in your mancala as possible, while also capturing your opponents’ stones.

The player who captures all of their opponent’s pieces or who collects the most pieces by the end of the game wins. Even though this may sound simple, Mancala is a game that requires strategical thinking and planning movements ahead of time.

This game can be played with two players, but it can also be played by more people at once if they have enough mancala boards available.

ANCIENT EGYPTIAN SENET

Senet is yet another game that Amelia mentions she likes very much. And Nubia surely knows it, as it’s a board game from Ancient Egypt! It was popular throughout the whole of Ancient Egyptian history, and is still played today – mostly by the conoisseurs of board games.

A senet table features a grid of 30 squares, which are arranged in three rows of ten squares each. The squares in the centre row are marked with different symbols, while the other two rows have five squares marked with different symbols each.

The Senet Game can be played by two players or by four players in teams of two players each. The playing pieces consist of one or more sets of five pawns for each player or team. The pawns are usually either figurines carved from ivory or wood, or small stones made from alabaster stone, limestone, etc.

PORTUGUESE CARD GAMES

As Amelia was strolling around Santa Ana, she spotted elders sitting outside of their houses, playing cards. That’s not such an odd sight; in the Mediterranean, many elderly people love sitting outside and playing cards, because they can do so in a group with friends or family members.

Playing cards are a popular pastime for elderly people who want to socialize with their friends. Cards can be used as a way to pass time, make new friends, and stay mentally sharp. Playing cards are a way for elderly people to stay active, social, and happy. When they have the opportunity to play cards outside in the sun, they can be outside for hours.

There are a lot of card games that people play in portugal, but the most popular ones are “Sueca,” “Brisca” and “Americana”.

CHECKERS

Do you remember who played checkers in “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony”? Probably not… Lara Lanorth! Surprised? Me too, I have trouble picturing her with it, but perhaps, we can learn something more about her palace life, in the future.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with checkers, here comes a brief description: the board game checkers is a two-player strategy board game. Players take turns moving their pieces diagonally across the board, jumping over any pieces that are in their way. The goal of the game is to capture all of your opponent’s pieces or block them so they cannot make any more moves.

Hopefully, we can learn more about games played by the mermaids in the next books of the “Mermaid Princess Amelia” fantasy series!
