Nubia Khaled

Name: Nubia Khaled

Mermaid kingdom: The Lotus State

Occupation: Nubia is the highest representative of the Lotus State, after the Mermaid Pharaoh. She has the title of the highest priestess. She’s also a high school student in Santa Ana.

Looks: Amelia describes Nubia as a short, feeble and pale person, who “spent the majority of her life underground.” She believes in Ancient Egyptian Religion, and thus, she doesn’t wear hijab. Her hair is short, black and unruly. When Amelia first meets her, she wears a dark blue tunic and black leggings. She cares about make-up and jewellery: she uses amethyst-colored eyeshadow and a turquoise bracelet.

Looks as a mermaid: Amelia says that Nubia’s tail was related to the flying fish, probably because of fins. She doesn’t say anything about the tail’s color. But judging from official artwork, it’s probably blue.

Personality: Amelia calls Nubia “the kindest person in the world” which points to the fact that she has a generally friendly personality. Nubia also seems shy, she stutters sometimes and doesn’t like participating in arguments. She never speaks up during arguments, or important moments, preferring to keep silent and see what will happen. She seems to be the mediator between the strong personalities of Davika and Edith. Nubia is scared of Lumina’s magic and some other things, but does her best, to act bravely in Nerland. Maybe, one of the reasons why she isn’t afraid, is because it reminds her of her own country, filled with different secrets.

Interests: Nubia is mostly busy with her country’s matters, such as festivities at the first cataract from the Nile’s delta. She seems interested in insects or rare species because she’s excited about seeing the great diving beetle on Nerland. And last but not least, she seems to enjoy sports quite a lot.

Best friends: Nubia is friends with all mermaids from Santa Ana: Edith, Davika, Poseyda, Kamadia, and Irene. She seems to have a positive relationship with Amelia. The two sometimes go jogging in the morning.

Love interest: Nothing is known about Nubia’s love interest.

Trivia:

  • Maxine wanted Nubia to be an agender or gender non-conforming character, and she first gave her the male name Seth. However, because there were already too many characters with the name starting with the letter S (Samantha, Sawa, Saliffa, Sokhanya…) she changed her name to Nubia. Nubia is a geographical region in Africa, north of Sudan and south of Egypt.
  • Interestingly, Nubia’s surname, Khaled, means “eternal,” it’s derived from Arabic word “khalada” meaning “to last forever.” But actually, Nubia got that surname, because, Maxine loved the song “C’est la vie” by DJ Khaled.
