When reading “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony,” you met many Antemidians. So many that you probably don’t even remember them all! Although there’s much cultural diversity in the novel, it remains a fact that almost 1/3 of the cast are Antemidians.
With this in mind, there’s plenty of material for a separate, detailed article about them as a nation. Let’s begin with the basics: their names and looks.
In Antemidia, many people have names starting with the letter A, e.g. Amelia, Alisha, Amida, Aalona, Asvald… However, names starting with T, such as Tony or Tikalie, are also popular. Most Antemidians use last names that are Spanish (Quintana, Martinez, Flores), but some seem Mayan (Uxmal, Yaxchilan).
Most have tanned skin, and their tail colors range from turquoise to bright green, with large caudal fins and side fins. Antemidian hair is thick and luscious, and the color may vary from blond (Amida) to dark (Tony) to graying (General Asvald). Many merpeople from this nation have hair characterized by an emerald glow and turquoise strands (common, but not a rule). Eye colors of Antemidians very between different shades of turquoise and bright green, although, many have dark eyes, as well.
Antemidians tend to be athletic, too. A great example here will be the guards protecting the entrance to the Uxmal Pyramid. If I remember right, I described them as muscular and scary-looking. Also, despite being a mermaid princess, Amelia practiced an ancient martial art called ASA (Antemidian Striking Art) and enjoyed recreational dancing, as well.
All merpeople from Amelia’s world are attractive, and so are Antemidians. Taisuke compliments Amelia on her beauty, but she brushes him off, stating, she’s average without her princely dress and make-up. Which points to another thing that seems common for Antemidians: they take a great care of their looks and always try to leave a great impression on others, especially when they’re in the court.
I’d like to move on to their personalities now, but before delving into this topic, I’ll make a short break to talk about their past. Historically, Antemidians used to be one of the greatest nations in the mermaid world, and they had excellent warriors, many of which became national heroes later. Antemidians elevated their most outstanding citizens to godhood, and created their own pantheon, despite having one already. Hence now, Antemidia has two pantheons, the Antemidian Pantheon, and the Mayan Pantheon.
The Antemidian civilization was an advanced and wealthy one. It has countless hallmarks such as arches and columns built from glass. However, in the present moment, those represent just a small fraction of the country’s past splendor. Amelia states that her country lost much, and doesn’t hesitate to call it an underdeveloped periphery of the Gulf of Mexico.
As she travels through the Caribbean Sea, you can instantly notice that certain areas – especially the ones in the third ring – are much poorer and neglected than the capital. And the nasty argument between General Aalona and Tony, points out that there was much hatred between the classes. It almost feels like, poorer people were an offense to the splendor of Antemidia, which tips the scale from “utopia” to “dystopia.”
Antemidians are extremely proud people; respect and honor are of utmost importance for them. They can go great lengths to remain loyal to their values, and sacrifice really a lot to keep their good name. The best examples of this, are both princesses: Amelia, and her predecessor Tikalie. Tikalie preferred to feign her death rather than abdicate, and Amelia refused to break her promise given to Jet Mir, even though, she was failing at her mission, and hating it.
Another thing that’s very characteristical of Antemidians, is their great appreciation of friendship. True friends are cherished, and they’re trusted no matter what. Their status has much significance. Antemidians love spending time with their friends, and they tell them everything, even their greatest secrets. They enjoy playing exotic board games (such as mancala or senet), as well as sneaking out to dance, and they like reggaeton which is popular in the whole basin of the Caribbean Sea (not just Antemidia!).
I think that this covers more or less everything, but if I remind myself of something, I’ll surely add another article on the topic. Thank you for visiting every day, it really means a lot to me!
