How to become an aquarium mermaid, or a professional mermaid model?

Written by Mermaid Lily

It might sound like a fairy tale, but we can all achieve the dream of being a mermaid… That’s right, you aren’t reading it wrong! Nowadays, both women and men can get hired as professional performers in swimming pools and public aquariums. The demand for these jobs can become quite large during peak season in touristic coastal spots. It won’t earn you a stable living, but it’s a great part-time gig for the summer, if you like swimming!

One of the best known mermaid performers are e.g. Raven Sutter, who designs hyper-realistic mermaid tails, and participates with her husband Tyler in the show “The Live Mermaid Exhibit & Show.” Other performers worth mentioning are the Venezuelan Mermaid Andreina, the Chinese Mermaid Dada Li, or the Spanish Susana Seuma, president and founder of the school for Tritons and Mermaids named “Mediterranian Academy.”

But if you think that working as a mermaid is easy, you are very working. Becoming a mermaid actress (or a merman actor) doesn’t just involve playing around in the pool. Swimming with the heavy tail on requires a very different technique than conventional swimming: most  movements are concentrated in the hips, waist and abdominals (a wonderful exercise for the legs and buttocks, in case you were wondering).

Being an aquarium mermaid also requires you to have lifeguarding knowledge and be prepared for any emergency, as well as the willingness to with sea animals, such as dolphins, seas or turtles.

Finding work opportunities will depend mostly on you. Regardless of whether you’re hoping to take part in real life exhibits, make fashion shots, or act in music videos, you will have to search for opportunities and work hard to make your name known.

As a professional performer says, it’s not an easy job, but a unique and special profession. If you are interested and never thought it was possible, believe it… you can become a mermaid, too!
