The Baltic Sea represents one of the most complex geopolitical regions in the mermaid world, a body of water where centuries of history, shifting alliances, and environmental crises converge. This brackish sea serves as the home to numerous kingdoms and territories, including Nerland, which dominates the central region, along with the Nordic Whitefish Republic in the north, the Driftwood Realm in the central Baltic, Hailand in the southeast, and Bursztynia in the south. The sea’s geography shapes its politics, with the Bothnia Sea, Gulf of Bothnia, Sea of Aland, Gulf of Finland, and Gulf of Riga forming distinct regions that have developed unique cultures and political structures over centuries.

The Baltic’s history is defined by conflict and alliance. The Gulf of Bothnia, Sea of Aland, and Gulf of Finland once formed an unbreakable alliance, while Hailand’s aggressive expansion claimed southeastern territories along the shores of Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. Nerland found itself vulnerable when Hailand and the Southern Baltic launched an assault on its northern provinces, forcing the county to borrow funds from the Southern Baltic and seek help from Hailand’s Knights of the Marine Cross Order. The knights reclaimed territories but refused to relinquish control, creating tensions that persist to this day. Subsequent generations continue to attack in hopes of reclaiming land, and merpeople in contested regions remain divided between those who want to join Hailand and those who value independence.

Environmental crises now compound the region’s political challenges. Dead zones—areas where water has such low oxygen levels that no animals can survive—threaten the marine ecosystem across the Baltic. Excessive algae growth dies and decays, depleting oxygen levels and causing seafloor organisms and invertebrates to die off, potentially collapsing the marine food chain. The Nordic Republic, Driftwood Kingdom, and Hailand are dealing with this problem, and the Southern Baltic representative needs to be included in the upcoming summit addressing the crisis. The Baltic Sea’s future depends on whether its nations can cooperate to address environmental challenges while managing the political tensions that have defined the region for centuries.
