Those who have been in the Harry Potter fandom, still reminisce it with incredible nostalgia. They’re hoping for a new series which will invite them to a breathtaking world, and take them on the same emotional ride, inspiring them to create fanfiction and fan art…

Seeing how popular “Mermaid Princess Amelia” became recently, we will consider if it can be a match to Harry Potter and if Harry Potter fans will enjoy reading it.

It might seem that the two series aren’t related at all, one being about a wizard and one about a mermaid princess. But read on! The two stories have much more in common than it’d seem at first glance…

Similarities between Amelia Quintana and Harry Potter

Dark hair and sparkling green eyes aren’t the only thing connecting the two. Take a look at everything that their characters have in common!

  • Both Amelia and Harry are orphans. But while Harry learns that both his parents are dead and struggles with his aunt, uncle and step-brother, Amelia has more complicated family situation: she doesn’t even know her parents. Once she learns more about them, she learns about a missing sister, and a secret, dark kingdom awaiting her visit.
  • Both Amelia and Harry start out as underdogs. Bullies break Harry’s glasses, he gets punished for things that aren’t his fault, and he’s disliked even at Hogwarts. As for Amelia, well… In the first chapters of the story, she loses her mermaid kingdom, gets scammed by Jet Mir, and nasty girls try to sabotage her all the time.
  • As novel continues, both Amelia and Harry become heroes. Harry fearlessly fights Voldemort for the philosopher’s stone, and Amelia swims to the Mausoleum of Lost Symphonies, to fight four demons. Their bravery, courage, and desire to protect what’s good, is basically same.
  • Both Amelia and Harry are the “chosen ones” who must live up to their destiny. Harry was chosen to defeat Voldemort, but he starts out as a clueless eleven-year-old. Amelia isn’t doing much better in her princely quest: she struggles with her duties, and she considers herself much worse than the previous princess, Tikalie.

The complex character cast in Harry Potter and Mermaid Princess Amelia

One of the things that we all loved in Harry Potter, was a highly complex cast. Same goes for Mermaid Princess Amelia. Check out

  • In both Harry Potter and Mermaid Princess Amelia, we have well-structured societies. In Harry Potter, we had descendants of Hogwarts founders, aristocratic magical families (such as the Malfoys or Blacks), and Muggle-born wizards. In Mermaid Princess Amelia, on the other hand, we’ve got countless mermaid kingdoms with their own nations, rulers, societies, political and class systems… We also have a population of merfolk migrants living on the land. How cool is that?!
  • Both Harry Potter and Mermaid Princess Amelia, are fantasy series with countless characters from very different ages, looks and backgrounds. The first books in the Harry Potter series mostly revolved around Harry and his classmates; but there were also older siblings, parents, teachers… even ghosts! Same is in Mermaid Princess Amelia: we have teenage girls and boys, adult women and men, elderly characters and also ancient heroes and gods. Everyone comes from a different mermaid kingdom, and has unique looks and back-story. There’s so much to explore and countless characters you can fall in love with!
  • Harry Potter and Mermaid Princess Amelia borrow heavily from character archetypes. In Harry Potter, we had the wise old man (Albus Dumbledore), the loyal companion (Ron Weasley), the outsider (Luna Lovegood), etc. In Mermaid Princess Amelia, we have the rebel (Lumina Mond), the caregiver (Edith Dvali) and the jester (Lara Lanorth).
  • Neither Harry Potter nor Mermaid Princess Amelia divide characters into purely good or purely bad. Some “balance” on the thin line, switching sides. In Harry Potter, we had Peter Pettigrew, Horace Slughorn and Severus Snape. In Mermaid Princess Amelia, it’s the same, with Amelia Quintana, Lumina Mond, Davika Thani, Jet Mir Thakur… and more.

Two highly developed worlds with several details

Harry Potter’s world was so full of new inventions, places, and original things, it triggered everyone’s imagination. Everyone was curious about the next great spell, enchanted place, or dark secret… And the world in Mermaid Princess Amelia is just the same! Readers get to read about countless mermaid kingdoms, all of which have their own culture, history, and architecture. There’s so much to explore, and if you’re somebody looking for a new fandom, Amelia’s world gives you endless possibilities for creating your own original characters, mermaid kingdoms, and so on. Long, ongoing book series that don’t end right away

There’s nothing worse than falling in love with a new book or tv series, and seeing it end right away! Harry Potter was a long ride, with seven books; and Mermaid Princess Amelia, will be even longer: Maxine Foti declared she wants to write twelve books.

In both series, every new novel builds upon the world created, adding more and more details to it, developing characters further, and taking readers on more breathtaking adventures… “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” was just released, but the blog grows, the fandom grows, and there will be more books in the future. Hence, if you’re bored after you’ve finished all Harry Potter books and movies, and are looking for a new fandom that you’ll love, you’re welcome to jump into the ship with us and join this fantastic adventure!

The first fansite, Mermaids’ Underground, will be launched soon! Make sure to follow this blog so that you can receive updates. The fanbase of Mermaid Princess Amelia is constantly growing. Don’t miss out!

Insane plot-twists and plenty of mystery related to future events

J. K. Rowling always kept us on the edge of our seats regarding Harry’s future: and so does Maxine Foti. Those who have already read the first novel in her mermaid series, are all going crazy, trying to figure out, what’s going to happen next. Especially that Maxine Foti has already showed readers, she can create shockingly good plot twists (you can find some here and here, but watch out for spoilers!). And even though the ending of “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” was very satisfying, there’s still so much mystery… Everyone wants to know, if Amelia can make her country regain its position in the Atlantic Ocean, and how she’s going to do it. You can read speculations about the second novel in the series, in here.

Magic and fantasy mixing with our real-life existence

After reading Harry Potter, we could see magic everywhere… Mostly because, fantasy elements mixed with realism. Mermaid Princess Amelia is based on a very similar structure: the mermaids’ world co-exists with human world, and the two merge.

Interestingly, even though Mermaid Princess Amelia is more realistic than paranormal, there is some mermaid magic that you’ll find. Here’s a separate article about it, if you’re interested in the topic.

Also, Maxine Foti has outlined and co-written several books about magic. Together with Seraphine Blair, they create a romance series about magical collegiums around the world, which draws heavily from folk magical traditions across different countries, and their main focus, is paranormal romance. One such novel that you may be interested in, is “Rosalie at the Collegium of Pagan Witchcraft” which tells the love story of an orphaned Wiccan living in the times of WW2.

With all this having been said, if you loved Harry Potter, you should definitely give Mermaid Princess Amelia a try. You will love it for the same things, for which you had loved Harry Potter!
