“Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” is a fantasy story with numerous plot twists that really shock the reader. The extreme changes in the plot guarantee a crazy ride for any individual who picks it.
Since the first article about five greatest plot twists in “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” was such a hit, Maxine’s team asked me to write another one, this time, using suggestions you emailed us or suggested in the comments or on social media. Those of you who haven’t read the novel yet, careful – the article contains spoilers.
Plot twist #1 – Amelia signs up for karate trainings
Crazy, right?! I’ve thought this too. You would expect a mermaid on land, to comb her hair, create jewellery and sing on rocks. Instead… Amelia signs up for karate classes!
But as a friend pointed out to me, her affinity for martial arts was already foreshadowed earlier – in the scene, as she mentions ASA to Jet Mir. ASA stands for Antemidian Striking Art, and it is somewhat similar to karate. Amelia recalls, her ASA master mentioned it to her, several times, as she and her group went to practice fights outside of the water.
Hence, it soon becomes obvious that the very reason why Amelia decides to take karate, is to avoid forgetting her skills in ASA. As she joins the training group in Santa Ana, she definitely isn’t the worst in the group – even though she loses several times against her partner, Taisuke.
As Amelia’s friend Lara notices later, Amelia never misses training. Sports are generally one of her greatest passions. She enjoys jogging with Nubia, and dancing, too – through retrospection, we learn that she would sometimes sneak out with her friends Araminta and Tony, to dance in an underwater reggaeton club back in Antemidia.
Plot twist #2 – Amelia nearly kisses Taisuke’s brother
When Amelia saved Taisuke from drowning, we were hoping for a kiss, and a romantic confession. Instead?! Maxine played with Amelia’s emotions, and with ours, too. The rescued man turns out to be not Taisuke, but his twin brother Hansuke – an arrogant eighteen year old. A normal person would thank their savior, but what does Hansuke do? He gets into an argument with her, offending her favorite sport, and telling her, she’s weird for liking his brother Taisuke.
Even though, Amelia has great self control and seldom snaps at people, she loses patience around him. Perhaps, she was also mad, it wasn’t his brother, after all? Who knows? She might have a thing for Taisuke, after all. (You may read more about her potential love interests in here).
Plot twist #3 – Sawa is an ally, and Meevani is actually Sawa’s sister
I was personally only mildly surprised, having read that Sawa was an ally. It was obvious to me, Jet Mir would have more trusted people on his side and that he wouldn’t assign such important mission to Amelia, without having somebody that could give him a guarantee, Amelia was actually doing her best.
However, learning that Meevani was actually Mewa, Sawa’s younger sister, who joined Jet Mir with the sole purpose of travel the world, was shocking! I never saw it coming! Neither did at least ten people who wrote me.
Plot twist #4 – Jet Mir’s own sisters are against him
Another plot twist that surprised everybody – me too! – was learning about Darsha and Kashvi’s betrayal. I never would have thought that Jet Mir’s own sisters could plot against him.
Another shock came, when it turned out that they were on Lumina’s side…
This novel could have been very simple, if Amelia and Lumina were fighting together against Jet Mir, Darsha and Kashvi. But by introducing complicated family relationships and accidental alliances, Maxine did her best we didn’t feel bored reading.
Plot twist #5 – Leticia’s illness had an extremely complex cause
When I first read about Leticia being ill, I thought of a condition similar to that one, Sawa contracted before her and Amelia’s journey to the Land of Barite Roses. I have never imagined, she was actually a descendant of an ancient demon, Lehatari, and cursed, and that Kamadia, Saliffa and Raisa were suffering from the same problem, too!
Seeing how much Maxine Foti loves leading her readers on, and then surprising them in different ways, I really can’t wait to read the second novel in the series, “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Destiny’s Theater!” You can read the team’s speculations about it, in here.
