In “Mermaid Princess Amelia” fantasy series, mermaids have different relationships with numerous animal species that share sea water with them. In this article, we will take a closer look at those. Hopefully, you can find some inspiration for your mermaid fanfiction!

Fish is a regular food source for mermaids and tritons who tend to stick to the pescatarian diet. It’s important to note though, that although some species such as puffer fish or lionfish are toxic and can’t be used as food, other ones such as tuna, mackerel, herring, or salmon do not pose any danger – and merfolk knows it! Another important source of food are clams and oysters, farmed in large quantities.

However, the relationship between mermaids and marine animals definitely goes beyond food. For example, octopus ink is a valuable resource, widely used for letter writing, as well as dark dye. And animals such as dolphins, whales and other cetaceans are not only pleasant and amusing companions, but they are also excellent means of transportation.

Dolphins are perfect for traveling short distances and are the equivalent of horses or donkeys in the medieval times – or bicycles / motorbikes in modern times. Whales, which have migratory habits, are more ideal for long distances. All mermaids have to do to travel from one ocean to another, is pay for their whale ticket, find the allotted seat in a carriage installed on the whale’s back and embark on a long journey. It’s safe to say that in the mermaids’ world, whales are the equivalent of buses, ships, and planes of the underwater world.

But not all large underwater creatures are friendly to mermaids; for example, fierce and unpredictable barracudas are their enemies. Lightning-fast, strong, and with wide jaws full of teeth that open like scissors, they’re better to be avoided.

Sharks can also be dangerous. Some species, such as whale sharks, are harmless. However, tiger sharks – common in the Caribbean, Pacific, and the Gulf of Mexico – are voracious, impulsive, and capable of breaking a turtle’s shell with their teeth. They also attack without provocation!

Incredibly, these predators can also be preyed upon, especially by reckless mermen who hunt them for prestige and shark skin which is a valuable resource used as… book covers!

However, most mermaids seldom think of sharks, more concerned with jellyfish. Although they never attack, they are so toxic that just touching them results in painful stings that can destroy tissues and scales of mermaids, coloring them a somber shade of gray.

Lastly, there are the electric eels. Their paralyzing touch can be fatal, although they are also hunted by mermen, for skin and food.

Yet, despite the few dangers, sea creatures and mermaids enjoy each other’s company. Colorful fish, sea cucumbers, and crabs adorn reefs and corals like butterflies in a garden. Not forgetting the sea turtles and porpoises that some mermaids keep as pets, which brighten their days and make them smile.
