Why did the Fibonacci Spiral become a symbol of the “Mermaid Princess Amelia” fantasy series?
Why did the Fibonacci Spiral become a symbol of the “Mermaid Princess Amelia” fantasy series?

You may have noticed that many Amelia-related websites have distinctive shell-shaped graphics. It is not just any shell, but a Fibonacci spiral-shaped shell.

Several people have asked me if this is the new logo for the series. The answer is no, the official logo is an English title with the letter A inscribed in three rings representing Amelia’s country – Antemidia.

However, the seashell does matter. It is a symbol of happiness that I chose for several reasons.

First of all, it reminds me of Amelia’s beginnings. When correcting the first draft, I attended high school, in front of which there was a rock carving with ammonite carved on it. It was not a coincidence, my high school was located right next to the Kadzielnia Reserve, which consisted of a flooded quarry and a network of caves.

This ammonite had the shape of a logarithmic spiral, which caught my attention when we were learning mathematics about sequences of numbers, incl. Fibonacci sequence. As part of the IB Baccalaureate, we were supposed to write an extended essay in any subject, and I chose math.

This choice came as a surprise to everyone because I always lacked that ‘mathematical intelligence.’

However, there were actually many reasons why I chose to write an essay in maths. First, the teachers of Polish, English and German were not thrilled with any of my topics. Second, I had a good idea about biology, but didn’t want to experiment for fear that something would go wrong. And as for geography… I was so tired of the fieldwork that I didn’t want to go through it another time. And this is how I was left with math. It felt like the easiest option, even for someone like me.

I knew that I would write about something related to art and culture. I thought about the fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio for a long time, because it was a good opportunity to analyze some classic images. In high school, painting was my incredible passion, which Edith Dvali inherited from me. However, I think someone has written this topic before.

Somehow during this period, a logarithmic spiral jumped into my head. I guess I noticed her because there was a picture of a plant with a twisting shoot in the biology textbook. I thought it would be interesting to check if the forms found in nature could be described with mathematical formulas. At first I thought I would deal with spirals in general, but then as soon as I saw a logarithmic spiral, I chose it. And that’s because it reminded me of the ammonite that was engraved on this plaque in front of the reserve at our high school.

The logarithmic spiral was based on the fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio, and there was no such essay yet, so I chose this topic. It turned out that there are natural forms that can be described by the fibonacci spiral: incl. some shells or plants, but also a galaxy or a whirlpool.

It was a really fascinating topic, which actually started with a local monument and showed the beauty of mathematics and nature, and the fact that microcosm and macrocosm are related.

The commission liked the essay very much, I got the maximum points. Then for a long time he was shown to other students as a model.

After a while, I completely forgot about this case. No wonder – I graduated from high school in 2013.

After more than 8 years, the logarithmic spiral has reappeared in my life. While looking for a shell, I found this ammonite symbol, and as soon as I saw it, I knew I would post it on the blog.

The logarithmic spiral is actually an expansion symbol. If we typed a formula into the program, the computer would draw a spiral that extends beyond the graph, growing steadily with each new revolution. It is a symbol that even something small can grow to great size.

In the beginning, only one person knew Amelia Quintana. It was me. But the more time passes, the more people hear about her. I hope that more people will hear about it over time. Once you know this, you will never look at this graphic the same way again.

I think the logarithmic spiral will appear in the saga someday. But I still have to think carefully about it.
