How to dress like a mermaid at school? Your quick guide to everyday mermaid clothes and mermaid fashion!

Written by Mermaid Lily

Mermaid style is not exclusive to the sea areas, although some might believe so. It’s not about dressing up as a mermaid either! You don’t need to wear a tail to sport the vibrant style so characteristic of mermaids.

What truly gives you a mermaid look, is choosing clothes that will help you maintain an elegant look, simultaneously making people think of the sea.

In this article, I will help you choose right outfits that will help you effortlessly throw together an outfit worthy of a princess of the seas.

The first garment that absolutely every “wannabe mermaid” needs to have, is obviously a mermaid skirt.

These will mold to the shape of your hips and thighs, but are roomier from the knees down to the ankles, and end up with the ruffles resembling a harmonic. Such as skirt will not only make other things of a sea beauty, but also make you look naturally slimmer, and draw attention to  your figure without wearing revealing clothing.

Another options will be fishscale leggings. Most people believe that they’re kitschy and good for dress-up parties, but that’s not true. If you know how to wear them, they can make a fantastic effect.

One more piece of clothing that all wannabe mermaids should have, is much more casual. Perhaps, you already have it in your closet somewhere! I’m obviously talking about an oversized, knitted or crocheted sweater. Such sweaters  are a bit reminiscent of fishnets, which would make you look like a mermaid emerging from the waters with a net on your back (a bit like Mermaid Princess Lumina Mond, but not exactly! If you remember right, she was wearing a dark gown).

Some colors that you will want to opt for, are probably going to be various shades of blue, green and purple, as well as silver, as these are mostly associated with mermaids. Don’t forget, though, that the mermaid princesses from Maxine Foti’s fantasy series wore various colors, typically the ones reminding them of their kingdoms – as a way to express their nationality. So, don’t be afraid to try warmer tones, like red, or orange!

And last but not least, don’t forget about the accessories. Pearl earrings or bead necklaces (like the one you’ve learned to make earlier with Olivia), will complete the look. You can also try hairpins, brooches, or medallions decorated with seashells or starfish. Those will work particularly well with your sweater.

The best shoes for mermaids would probably be comfortable sandals – but they may not always be practical for you, so instead, look for shoes with shiny or glittery parts, especially if you want to wear glitter fabrics often, as part of your mermaid style.

And don’t forget about the nails! Beautiful glitter nails will definitely give an amazing finish to your look!

  1. […] Fabrics and Textures: Choose materials that move and catch the light like water. Think flowy chiffons, smooth silks, delicate lace, sparkling sequins, and iridescent fabrics that change color in the light. (Psst!
