Did you know that today we have the National Lobster Day, the National Hunting and Fishing Day, and also, the National Cooking Day?
Unfortunately, many people still don’t feel that they need to eat fish and seafood frequently. Instead, they enjoy other meat dishes, such as turkey breast for dinner with a nice glass of wine – which is a pity, because varied diets offer us many nutrients.
We were wondering why it is so.
It could be because, some people are really worried about ocean and river pollution, and their fear of consuming heavy metals discourages them from eating more fish and seafood. Others think that those taste good only at the seaside. But that’s not the case anymore, with fish farming and fast food transport.
Another worry is that eating fish and sea food is in reality bad for our planet. However, it is a fact that aquaculture is better for the environment than agriculture. Farming fish takes less space, and fish don’t contribute that much carbon dioxide to the planet. As such, by eating more seafood, you’re lowering your carbon footprint. If you want to become even more sustainable in your consumption, try to buy local and seasonal fish, and make sure it’s line caught.
For this reason, we will talk today about a diet that’s not trendy, but a good fit if you’re hoping to start eating more fish and seafood. That’s, of course, the Pescatarian Diet.
This diet will help you reduce saturated fat and cholesterol. You’re also likely to lose weight. However, make sure to consult your doctor before embarking on it – just to make sure, you can switch to it. The diet’s generally not recommended for pregnant women.
There’s a great dispute whether Pescatarians are Vegetarians or not. We won’t engage in this heated topic. Instead, we’ll let you know what Pescatarians eat.
First of all, Pescatarians eat fish and seafood, but not meat.
Some samples of fish that they eat are salmon, tuna, trout, sardines, cod, carp, catfish, etc.
Then, there’s shellfish: shrimps, crawfish, crabs, mussels, clams, scallops, and lobsters.
The diet is supplied by vegetables, beans, seeds, nuts, grains and soya products.
Pescatarians also eat eggs and dairy, so don’t worry, you won’t need to give up on your favorite yoghurt or cheese.
You may be wondering now, whether mermaids from “Mermaid Princess Amelia” fantasy series are pescatarians. Nobody introduced themselves as such. However, by observing those characters’ dietary habits, it can be observed that mermaids mostly eat fish and seafood, picking these options whenever possible.
We gathered five recipes described in the first novel: you can check them out here, perhaps, something will inspire you for dinner! Also, if you’re looking forwards to opening a seaside restaurant, here’s an article with great décor ideas.
