“Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” is a novel filled with so much adventure that the title protagonist seldom has the time to sit down and think about, what to eat. Despite that, it looks like the cuisine of the mermaid world is very varied. If you are looking for snack inspirations, check out these recipes!
Amelia’s rosemary and sea salt breadsticks
Amelia always enjoys them as her ready to go snacks; she shares them with everyone who comes to visit her home. Even though she probably buys ready ones (there’s not a word in the novel about her baking), you’ll want to try this organic recipe, which is very easy to prepare. All you have to do is mix (preferably) spelt flour with a glass of water and a pinch of already diluted yeast. Then, add a little sea salt and olive oil to the dough, knead it, and let it rest. You may want to cover it with a clean cloth. Next, spread the mixture on a tray covered with baking paper, give it the shape of sticks, cover it with some rosemary leaves, olives, oil and sprinkle with yet more salt. Then, bake them for 15 minutes.
General Asvald’s pasta with oysters and garlic
This dish is one of General Asvald’s favorites. He enjoyed it greatly during Amelia’s farewell/welcome ball, and even offered some to his rival, General Aalona! Such pasta, is very easy to prepare. First, boil the noodles with a little salt and oil, while separately, in a large frying pan, melt butter together with chopped garlic. Stir it for around eight minutes. Add previously washed oysters and cook until their edges curl. Then, sauté everything with lemon juice and salt. To that, add pasta. Toss it well, and you’re done!
The Mausoleum Prisoner’s seaweed and oyster salad
For a long time, the Mausoleum of Lost Symphonies was home to thousands of mermaids and mermen, who, completely cut off from the outside world, adapted to live within its walls. Seaweed salads became one of their favorites. It can be made by washing the seaweed and sautéing it in a mixture of oil, garlic, salt, and seeds. For more variety, you can add the oysters, loose or in their shells, to the salad.
Greene’s famous spring rolls
This recipe comes from Greene Grant, the waitress working in the Chinese restaurant Jade Dragon. The place’s main specialty are spring rolls with shrimps. They are prepared by boiling two cups of water with about eight shrimp or prawns (peeled and deveined). Boil shrimps for around three minutes, until they turn completely pink, then pass them through ice water and let them cook for another three minute. Finally, cover them in rice paper with various vegetables and herbs. Some suggestions are: carrots, cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes, scallions, cilantro, basil, and sprouts. Remember to add a few tablespoons of lemon juice and some peanuts to enhance the taste. You should also accompany those spring rolls with some delicious sauce of your choice.
Jet Mir’s grilled fish with naan bread
Even though Jet Mir Thakur was exiled, he continues to enjoy delicious meals worthy of his status as the prince of Honey Earth, in his submarine. One of the dishes he surely enjoys, is fish (of many kinds) prepared on the grill. Since we know that Jet Mir is of Indian ancestry, we can guess that he likes his fish seasoned according to that country’s cuisine, that is, with a generous portion of Bengali pumpkin curry, and accompanied by a piece of Indian naan bread. This bread is made with a mixture of yeast, salt, flour, and a little yogurt and oil for the dough. Later, it is toasted with spices such as garlic, coriander, olive oil or butter. If you are cooking-savvy, you may want to try to recreate this dish at home!
