The mermen’s roles in “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” by Maxine Foti
Although most main characters of “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” are mostly mermaid princesses of the underwater kingdoms, mermen cast also plays a very important role in the story!
For starters, let’s talk about Jet Mir Thakur. He’s the catalyst of all drama in the novel. Without him, there wouldn’t be any adventure! Amelia’s mission starts only after meeting him… Even though theirs is not a romantic bond, his person stirs plenty of emotions – and drama – in her heart.
Jet Mir is an exiled merman prince and at the same time, a legitimate heir to the throne of Honey Earth in the Laccadive Sea. He’s the son of the main general of the army and the king’s sister. The throne was taken from him by the king himself, who made him responsible for a bloody massacre, to get him out of the way and put his own candidate on the throne.
Since his banishment, Jet Mir travels the seas in a large coppery submarine bequeathed to him by his grandfather. He’s searching for the guardian plates to uncover ancient power – but actually, any means that will allow him to return home and regain the throne, will do. He is a born warrior, and also – surprisingly! – a university professor who has lectured occasionally around sea world’s universities, such as the Lambert Academy of Liberal Awareness in the Bermuda Triangle. Although it’s not stated explicitly why he did that, there’s a great chance that he was trying to raise funds for everyday expenses.
Other notable princes from “Mermaid Princess Amelia” than we should mention, are Niran Thani and Huang Yan. Niran Thani is the brother of Davika Thani, the most important lady-in-waiting of the Thai Pearl Empire and niece of deceased empress, Kamon Thani. And Huang Yan is the ruler of the Yellow Sea, in China, and also an owner of an ancient, legendary sword. Even though neither Niran nor Huang Yan appear directly, they’re mentioned by several characters.
Still, it’s important to note that one doesn’t need to go to the east to meet great tritons. There are many more, such as General Asvald Altamira: the leader of the Council of Generals, which governs the nation of Antemidia. He’s a renowned politician and strategist, one that has a reputation of a wise, affable and trustworthy man. General Asvald knows several secrets, such as the whereabouts of the lost princess of Atlantis, Samantha Santoro, and now, also the true origins of Amelia and her connection to the royal family of Nerland…
At this point, you may be wondering, whether all mermen are royalty or important figures. The answer is no. Take Adavan Vega – he’s a commoner, and to be precise – an Antemidian photographer who worked on the Nerlandese court. Then, there’s also Aurelio – a middle-aged commoner who works as a border guard between the middle and central rings of Antemidia.
Interestingly, just like several mermaids leave oceans, seas and rivers to move on land. One such person is Jayden Ptolomeus Katharos, a young sea triton from Greece, notable for his beautiful blue eyes, golden-brown hair, and friendly demeanor. He’s a member of a special division of volunteer warriors charged with the task of ensuring the safety of mermaid princesses who visit the land.
Not far, we’ll find his friend Taisuke Hayama, who raises quite a lot of attention thanks to his black hair with reddish blow, and light blue eyes, very uncommon among Asians. Taisuke’s ancestry can be traced back to Sambath, a mysterious kingdom full of dark secrets, the location of which was lost over time. Taisuke is a calm and focused young man, used to living among humans. He’s a student of karate, and a very disciplined athlete.
Like you can see, mermen in “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” play several different roles in the novel. Even though they are in minority – 2/3 of characters are still girls – they matter. We hope that in the next parts of the series, Maxine Foti will introduce more male characters, so that we can understand their status and functions in the underwater world, better.
