Today’s world Bollywood Day! Did you know, Maxine Foti is fascinated with everything related to India? She loves bollywood music, and were it not for one song, Jet Mir wouldn’t even exist!
When Maxine was 16, her mother was watching an Italian sitcom, Tutti Pazzi Per Amore 2. There was an Indian-style wedding, with the famous song Say Shava Shava, originally from Indian movie Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.
The original movie made Maxine fall in love with Indian culture, and later, she watched several other bollywoods, her favorite being Jab We Met.
All this motivated Maxine to decide that Jet Mir’s character would be Indian. Interestingly, his name isn’t truly from the subcontinent. It was a self-made mix of the Korean name Jae and Hatmir – a misheard version of the Muslim name Hamir. This gave origin to the name Jae’hatmir / Jae’tmir, which was later simplified to Jet Mir. What a story!
Later, Maxine went to study Far East Asian Culture in college. She attended countless lectures about the Indian subcontinent, learning about its culture, literature, art, history and religion. Everything that she’d learned enriched Jet Mir’s character, and his country.
Because the problem of Jet Mir’s exile wasn’t solved by the end of “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony,” it looks like he’ll return in the next novels of the series. Readers are really hoping that we’ll eventually make a trip to his kingdom, the Honey Ground.
Maxine picked yellow, orange and gold colors for this kingdom, because they made her think about emotional warmth, friendship, and wealth, all characteristics that she wanted to give Jet Mir.
After reading all this, though, you may be wondering how come, she didn’t decide to write a love story between the main character of the series, Amelia, and Jet Mir.
The reason was, in the first draft of the novel, written in years 2007-2010, Jet Mir played a much smaller role, than now. Hard to imagine, isn’t it? But it’s true.
Also, there were many more interactions between Amelia and other guys (Taisuke, Jayden etc.) than with Jet Mir.
Because of it, Jet Mir needed another love interest. After a long reflection, Maxine decided to pair him with Edith. When asked about it, she said, she fell in love with their colors, she always found gold and black very fashionable. You can read more about Jet Mir and Edith’s love story, in here. But returning to Jet Mir: interestingly, his surname, Thakur, is actually a title. A thakur is an estate owner, who’s a bit below the raja – king. Interestingly, the title has also a female form, thakurani.
Right. What about Jet Mir’s sisters? There are five of them: Darsha, Kashvi, Meghna, Namya and Meevani. After learning Meevani’s story, and that she was actually a princess from the Southern Baltic Sea, we’re left with four mysterious girls. Maxine never introduces a character without giving it some meaningful purpose, so, we’re waiting to learn more about those ladies.
