The 5 major plot lines of Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony

Written by Mermaid Maxine

I remember that the five major plot lines of “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” were mentioned several times across various articles, but there was never one separate article dedicated fully to the topic, so here it goes.

Warning: if you haven’t read this novel yet but are planning to, don’t read this! It will spoil you the whole fun of reading the book. Here are some great articles for those who are only beginning their adventure with Mermaid Princess Amelia, go check them out instead!

For those of you who have read the novel already, the five plot lines are:

Plot Line No. 1 – Amelia’s Life In Antemidia

When you first hear from Amelia Quintana, you learn that she’s an orphan who was chosen to be the next elective princess of Antemidia. This unexpected honor forced her to part with her adoptive aunt, Alisha Quintana, who moved to Brazil, leaving Amelia at the palace. There, the young mermaid was coached by the Council of Generals, and soon became a bored, snobbish, and entitled girl. She doesn’t have any real power, but she’s nevertheless ambitious, and determined to become better than her predecessor, Tikalie Uxmal.

She spends much time studying history, and fulfilling her princely duties, such as giving speeches or opening the Coastal Season. She dislikes her lady-in-waiting, Amida Martinez, but is friends with Araminta Aragosta and Tony Alcantara, whom she considers to be her best friends. Together, they often play board games and sneak out of the palace, to dance. She has to be careful, though, otherwise, she’ll risk angering General Aalona. And she can’t really use Antemidian Striking Art to fight her.

That’s pretty much everything that you learn about Amelia’s life in Antemidia; it’s quite a boring life, if you think about it. Thank God, that the earthquake came in fast, and launched the whole adventure!

Plot Line No. 2 – Jet Mir’s Exile And Artifact Hunt

Although Amelia doesn’t fall in love with Jet Mir upon meeting him on the beach, he remains one of the most important characters of the novel. He’s so important, that his fates make up almost the whole second plot line in “The Lost Symphony.”

Because of unhealthy family dynamics and a power conflict in his home kingdom, Honey Earth, Jet Mir gets framed as a serial assassin responsible for the bloody massacre occurring in his palace. As a result, he must flee, and he does so on his grandfather’s crab-shaped submarine. He lives on it with mysterious girls that he calls his sisters (read more about them here), and travels the world, searching artifacts which will help him gain power necessary to return home. During that time, he does various jobs, such as trading precious objects or guest lecturing at universities.

He ends up in Santa Ana, where he befriends – among others – Edith, Sawa and Mewa (Meevani). He’s the one to guide Amelia, to travel to the little coastal town, and help her settle there. Even though he’s not with her in there, he shows up on more important occasions, such as Amelia’s birthday.

Plot Line No. 3 – The Lives Of The Santa Ana Mermaids

I can’t remember whether the Santa Ana mermaids were ever listed together; so here you go, the team consisted of Edith, Davika, Nubia, Sawa, Poseyda, Kamadia, Irene and Mewa. All of these girls, were close friends once, and knew much about each other. Although Amelia never became particularly close with any of them (maybe except Edith), she got a nice glimpse of how they lived. Davika was the team’s unofficial leader, and Edith was a not-that obvious opposition. The conflict between them started as a debate on whether to help Jet Mir. Davika won, Jet Mir left, and Edith remained broken-hearted. Soon, Irene left for Chicago, and Mewa and Kamadia both disappeared. As Amelia joined the team, she led the team to further disintegration, as Edith and Davika couldn’t agree on whether they should trust her, or not.

Plot Line No. 4 – The Tragic History Of The Mond Family

Up to this moment, the three plot lines described above were tied together very closely; it is the last two plot lines that create most surprising plot twists in the novel.

First, Davika gives Amelia an old book, stating, she has a sister, and then that sister shows up. She interferes in the affairs of the Santa Ana Mermaids, and in Jet Mir’s Artifact Hunt, and nobody knows why.

Lumina Mond is one of the most mysterious characters in “The Lost Symphony,” but that’s only cause you don’t get to hear her whole story right away; rather, it is served in chunks that are unevenly dispersed throughout the novel. And her story, isn’t truly the result of her deeds, but rather, of her and Amelia’s mother, Marzia Mond.

Marzia Mond, who was married to Andreas Mond (Lumina’s father), started an affair with her court photographer, Adavan Vega from Antemidia, who was Amelia’s father. As Amelia was born, neither of her parents could focus on her, so, Marzia gave her to her best friend Vera. Vera had to take Amelia to Adavan’s parents in Antemidia, but she lost the baby on the way.

Lumina didn’t believe, Amelia was dead, and she wanted to find her. She kept rebelling against her parents, eventually leaving for Tokyo, Japan. Her mother gathered her friends Kamon, Ailish, Vera and Estella, and together they went to the Mausoleum of Lost Symphionies, to get the power which she needed to bring her daughter home. However, the visit ended tragically, as almost all friends died, killed by the monster. Vera was the only one who managed to escape, and Amelia’s father, Adavan, who swam there at the last moment, became imprisoned. This led to Vera contacting Lumina, and Lumina promising herself, she’d avenge her mother. Because the only way to find the Mausoleum – which was changing places – was finding artifacts, Lumina began looking for artifacts, too.

Plot line no. 5 – The four demons and their descendants

The four plot lines described above sum up the novel pretty well, but there’s also the topic of the three (once four) demons living at the Mausoleum, and their descendants. In the beginning, the four demons – Rathana, Lehatari, Kolthida and Sokhanya – were the protectors of unconditional love and other beautiful values. However, Rathana had to make a sacrifice for her people, and as a result, she became a feral mermaid. She slaughtered her sister Lehatari. The other two sisters imprisoned Rathana in the Mausoleum, under the excuse of restoring her humanity, but in reality, the oldest sister was only interested in power, and soon, the place became a large prison.

One of the four descendants was Kamadia, and she happened to travel to the Mausoleum, with the goal of praying there. She became imprisoned, and over time, Amelia found her there.

Other descendants were Leticia, Saliffa and Raisa. Because of complex energetical dynamics between the four descendants and the four demons, Leticia was terminally ill. Amelia was very preoccupied about her, as the girl lived in the Gulf of Mexico, very close to Antemidia.

Interestingly, were it not for Leticia sending a goodbye message to Amelia, Amelia wouldn’t have found the Mausoleum, and she wouldn’t have rescued Kamadia. She wouldn’t have found her father, either.

I think that the whole magic of “The Lost Symphony” can be attributed to these last two plot lines showing up bit by bit, because, they’re what makes the base story – composed of the first three plot lines – so interesting. In the next article, I will look further in detail at the crucial points where the five plot lines merge each other, for those of you who are interested in analyzing the structure of “The Lost Symphony.”
