Originally inspired by one of the attractions at an amusement park, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie saga went on to become one of the biggest social phenomena of recent times.
Characters like Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann and Davy Jones are just some of the many names that fans and admirers of this famous saga have in their hearts, not to mention the true star of the series: charismatic and irreverent Jack Sparrow. Together, these unique characters are wound up in a story filled with exciting voyages, sea adventures and magical treasure hunts… somewhat similar to what you can find in “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony.”
But first things first. Did you know, “Mermaid Princess Amelia” starts out in the Caribbean Sea? The titular protagonist of the story, Amelia Quintana, is the ruler of an undersea mermaid kingdom located right below that sea’s shimmering, turquoise surface!
Ąlso, as you surely know, in the fourth movie of the “Pirates” series, mermaids play an important role in the story. In “Mermaid Princess Amelia” it is also like this: they are regular characters making up the major part of the cast!
Moreover, in both stories the protagonists are suddenly dragged away from their everyday lives – all because of a major event beyond their control. In the “Pirates” series, it was the kidnapping of Elizabeth by Hector Barbossa’s pirate crew, and in “Mermaid Princess Amelia” – a devastating earthquake which destroyed her palace, forcing her to agree to a shady deal with Captain Jet Mir Thakur.
Another similarity are strained and difficult relationships protagonists have with each other, for example Will and Jack, or Amelia and her elusive sister Lumina. At first, Amelia truly distrusted Lumina, but in the end, it turned out that she had a good reason, to portray herself as a bad guy…
And last but not least, we can’t forget about adventure and exploration, as well as the hunt for a special object of crucial importance. In the first movie of the “Pirates” series, characters search for Elizabeth’s golden medallion, and in the fourth one: for the mysterious fountain of youth. In “Mermaid Princess Amelia,” there are nine ancient artifacts belonging to old, aristocratic undersea families. Those artifacts contain shells which can serve as keys to the guardian plate, which will in turn reveal a secret said to turn the course of history. Overall, the story is very complex. To wrap up, we think that that yes, if you enjoyed the “Pirates of the Caribbean,” you’ll have a good time, reading about “Mermaid Princess Amelia,” too. It’s important to remember, though, that “Mermaid Princess Amelia” is a novel set in modern times, and that the protagonist is a teenage girl, who except her mission, faces problems common for all adolescents. With this in mind, it’s recommended for younger audiences. Still, that doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy it as an adult!
