A mermaid leaves her beloved home in the sea, and steps out on the beach. Then, she meets a man who catches her attention, and falls head over heels (fins?) in love with him…
Wait a moment, that’s not how the story of “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” goes!
Amelia does step out on the beach, but definitely not in a curious and joyous state of mind. She’s literally thrown out of her kingdom by a violent undersea earthquake…
As she grieves over everything that she’s lost, she bumps into a good looking man, Jet Mir. But no, there aren’t any butterflies flying. On the contrary, he cheats her, and tricks her into a mission. During its course, she begins to understand him, and they do become friends, but… they don’t fall in love. There’s no attraction, no confession, and no kisses. Instead, Amelia seems to fall for someone completely different, and her new best friend, Edith, wins Jet Mir’s heart (which is actually a good thing!).
Not your typical mermaid love story, yeah?
Many readers were baffled. Some pointed this scenario as the book’s fatal flaw. However, they’re very wrong. This odd plot line is not the book’s fatal flaw, it’s its greatest strength. Maxine Foti had a very good reason, to write her novel like it.
She was bored of old mermaid stories based on the simplified scenario mentioned above. She was fed the Andersen/Disney story of a “mermaid in new world” and grew tired by it, like us all. You know what it’s like with mermaid fiction. If you read one novel, you’ve basically read them all.
No wonder, nobody’s interested in it, in adulthood. People want more complex stories, they want mature, developed heroes. And if you take a look at other supernatural races – angels, demons, vampires, witches, elves, etc. – they all get amazing stories, packed with adventure, fight, power and magic… Mermaids seem to be the only ones, who were left behind.
They remained clueless protagonists of highly simplified romance novels. Novels filled with the same, boring, old motifs: sea storms, shipwrecks, saving hot guys from drowning, CPR kisses leading to true love, double-identity love triangles, etc…
Maxine identified early that this was precisely the reason behind why people don’t read mermaid fiction later on, in life. She knew that they were bored of it, just like her, and decided to give her readers something brand new: a mermaid story where the girl’s more than just another protagonist of yet another dull, highly simplified romance.
With this in mind, she made up her mind to learn from other great fantasy authors, and create a well-developed mermaids’ world with countless undersea kingdoms hosting various nations, cultures and histories. She wanted the world to be so epic that nobody who comes upon it, can resist its charm.
To that, she crafted a highly gripping, plot-twist packed action, borrowing from several literary genres, to make sure that the readers remain glued to the novel from the first to the last page.
By doing so, she made sure that the story of Mermaid Princess Amelia, would be one filled with countless side-stories and adventures. And now, she’s showing readers (and authors!) that mermaid stories can be epic – and that’s something revolutionary, something which will change people’s outlook on mermaid fiction, forever.
Mermaid fiction is not going to be the same anymore, from now on. Because now, readers and authors will learn that they can expect much more from mermaids books that what’s being published. Maxine Foti has become a trend setter in the world of mermaid fiction and authors are already signing contracts for novels even slightly resembling to Mermaid Princess Amelia. Why, because they know, a literary revolution in the genre is coming. The mermaids are about to become the new coolest superhuman race in the next decade. No fellow author wants to be left behind, and it happened, when great fiction about wizards and vampires was published.
By far, we’ve seen only one novel about Mermaid Princess Amelia and it has already stirred interest in several important circles. What will happen once the second novel is released? What will it bring? The only answer we can be sure of is: more pioneering changes.
