In ‘Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony,’ Jet Mir was introduced to us as an exiled prince from Honey Earth, so we didn’t get to know him as a lovable young merman who was full of life – but he was one. We can learn that easily from the first story collection (“Mermaid Stories from the Undersea World of Mermaid Princess Amelia, Vol. 1”). This article explores how Jet Mir changed over time.
As a prince, Jet Mir was a trusting, selfless, and generous young man. He got along well with others, both his close and distant family. Even when he found out that his aunt was planning to get rid of him so that her son would take over the throne, he wasn’t upset. He didn’t have the ambition to become the next maharaja, and he was fine with accepting a lesser position in order to keep others happy. However, because he was a dutiful son and his mother insisted that he take over the throne, he decided to follow her requests.
As a captain, Jet Mir is an entirely different person from the one he was as a young merman. This is expected as one is supposed to grow and develop with time. However, he was severely bruised by life, which had an impact on his psyche and personality.
After the Massacre of Mrigatrishna City, Jet Mir had no choice but to run away from home with the help of his mother. Living alone in his grandfather’s submarine with severe post-traumatic stress disorder wasn’t easy. Jet Mir couldn’t count on anyone but himself, and the loneliness that he experienced forced him to become tough. He had to understand that people were inherently selfish and only had their best interests at heart, even though they needed to hurt others in the process.
One intriguing way in which we can notice the difference between Prince Jet Mir and Captain Jet Mir is by looking at how he behaved and related with people before and after the massacre. Before the massacre, he was open, honest, and trusting.
Let’s compare his conversations with Sha Mir and Amelia.
When Jet Mir’s mother asked him to insist on overtaking the throne, Jet Mir didn’t think of any dirty trick to get rid of his first cousin. Rather, he went to talk to him and explained the matter, after which he openly asked to be given precedence. When Sha Mir agreed, Jet Mir believed him right away and didn’t ask for any extra guarantees.
However, when Jet Mir saw Amelia for the first time on the beach, he acted completely differently. Rather than talk to her honestly about the artifacts and ask for help, he kept his true intentions hidden and forced her to sign a contract (when a promise would have been more than enough). To that he became greedy himself when he discovered that the artifacts would bring him affluence, and he was determined to get them at all costs, even if it included stealing from others (including his beloved Edith). Although, it’s possible that he became greedy due to his stay in the Bermuda Triangle. As we know from the first story collection, society was quite corrupted.
Jet Mir’s transition from Prince Jet Mir to Captain Jet Mir tells us that our experiences in life determine who we become later in life.
