Natalie Uxmal is a character in the Mermaid Princess Amelia fantasy series by Maxine Foti. She first appeared in Stories from the Undersea World of Mermaid Princess Amelia, Volume 1.
Natalie Uxmal is an adult mermaid living in the Uxmal Manor in Atanga, Antemidia. She is the mother of the legendary mermaid princess of Antemidia, Tikalie Uxmal, and a proactive, ambitious matriarch who continues to revere the Mayan pantheon.
Like many other Antemidians, Natalie holds the Mayan gods in deep reverence. She named her daughter after the Mayan city of Tikal and often took her on land to see the Mayan sights. When Tikalie turned twelve, Natalie sent her to the Antemidian city of Aternidad to become a priestess and learn meditation.
Aside from tending to her daughter’s spiritual development, Natalie ensured that Tikalie received the best education possible. She enrolled her in the High SEAS (High School for Elite Antemidian Sisters), one of the finest schools in the entire country—if not the finest.
Natalie was also the one who personally suggested her daughter’s candidacy for the post of the next elective princess. Without consulting Tikalie, she submitted the proposal directly to General Asvald Altamira, who accepted it and personally chose Tikalie to be the next elective princess. It was her submission of the documents that led to Tikalie’s indisputable victory—a testament to the great faith she had in her daughter’s abilities and her willingness to push her into the political spotlight.
Tikalie was a role model who surely made her ambitious mother proud. However, it is clear that she would not have come this far without her mother’s help, power, and connections.
