Mermaid homes are a thing right now. So, why not decorate with oyster shells? Oysters are not just for eating anymore. They can be used for crafty DIYs too! They come in many shapes and sizes, so you can get creative with them to make any type of craft you want! You can use them as decorations for your home or office space or as gifts for your friends or loved ones! Check out the ideas below, and you’ll never throw oyster shells to trash after your seafood meal again.
Oyster Shell Craft Idea #1: Champagne bottle rings
Ou-la-la! This idea looks incredibly expensive and chic, and yet, it’s incredibly simple, and you can try it out even if you don’t own a private yacht (or island). All it takes, is a bottle of good alcohol and a bracelet made from an oyster shell, one decorated with golden paint and chinoiserie type of decoupage. If you aren’t afraid of paint, glue, and needles, you can do such a bottle ring very easily, and impress guests during your next home party.
Oyster Shell Craft Idea #2: Handkerchief rings
This idea isn’t that different from the previous one; you only use wooden beads, and another type of paper napkins to create the decoupage inside the oyster shell. Also, you replace the elastic string with a hay one, for a more rustic look. These would work fantastic for a hotel breakfast and definitely make it to the guests’ social media feeds.
Oyster Shell Craft Idea #3: Oyster Shell Seasalt Bowl
Who said you need to keep salt in a boring glass jar? Give your kitchen a more marine look by choosing to use a cleaned and decorated oyster shell as a salt bowl.
Oyster Shell Craft Idea #4: Oyster Shell Soy Sauce Bowl
If you’re looking for a soy sauce bowl that will make your sushi look fantastic, then this is the one. The shell is perfect for serving soy sauce or any other condiment. It adds an additional marine look to sushi, which already looks very effective.
Oyster Shell Craft Idea #5: Oyster Shell Soap Dish
Look at this soap dish made from an oyster shell – doesn’t it look cool? Of course, if you’re creating it by yourself, remember that the dish must be laquered with non-toxic, water-resistant laquer. Otherwise, the decoupage and paint will get ruined from contact with water.
Oyster Shell Craft Idea #6: Oyster Map Necklace
If you’ve read “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” by Maxine Foti, you know that mermaids aren’t very tech-savvy. They still use maps and old instruments such as the compass, to figure out their direction. Imagine how happy they’d be, if they could get such a necklace! It looks really awesome.
Oyster Shell Craft Idea #7: Oyster Necklace with Abstract Paint
If wearing an oyster with a map inside feels a bit exaggerated to you, check out these beautiful necklaces covered with abstract paint. If they remind you of the seven chakras, you probably didn’t get it wrong!
Oyster Shell Craft Idea #8: Oyster Shell Prayer Beads
Going deeper into spirituality, we’ve got prayer beads decorated with oyster shells. I must say that these look really cool and I’m not sure if they remind me more of a Christian rosary, or of Buddhist prayer beads. I actually feel that they’re a mix of both. You can create such prayer beads very easily, if you have an oyster shell and beads, a thread and needle, and of course, some golden paint to decorate the elements you’d like to expose. Kamadia, the mermaid princess specializing in soul rituals, would surely love these. Who knows, maybe she even has her own pair?!
Oyster Shell Craft Idea #9: Cute and colorful oyster shell keychains
My mother has always believed that there’s no such thing as wearing too many colors; and she’d surely love one of these keychains. Do you have someone like that, in your life? If yes, you may be interested in making such a keychain, and gifting it to them.
Oyster Shell Craft Idea #10: Variegated Oyster Shell Ring Dishes
These ring dishes are made of natural oyster shells, cleaned and gilded, with an decoupage application on the inside. They have a beautiful color, and are great for storing rings, earrings, or other small pieces of jewelry.
As you can see, oyster shells have been used as decoration for a long time. You can use them to get creative, decorate your home or make gifts for friends.
