10 most terrifying scenes in “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony.”
We had lots of articles grouping together different scenes from “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” – but here comes another one. If you are considering making your child read the book, be mindful of these scenes, so you can work through them together. The scenes are all in a chronological order. If you haven’t read the book, but, are hoping to do it, watch out! There are many spoilers here.
Scene #1 – Amelia swimming for her life from the crumbling palace
Natural disasters are no joke, and if you never witnessed one, you’ve got a chance to experience it through the eyes of this novel’s main character. Amelia got badly injured, lost most of her belongings, and honestly, barely made it out alive. Had she chosen to swim out of the palace through lower floors, she’d probably be buried alive. Creepy!
Scene #2 – Amelia wakes up on the beach, realizing, her best friend and (everyone she knew) died
This scene, is even worse, than the one with Hansuke. Why, because, Amelia was very attached to Araminta, and also to the people in her court. Even though she disliked Amida, she later cried at the thought of her dying in the palace. The pain of losing someone that we know well and really care about, is unbearable; and that’s why, I placed this scene much upper on this list, than the other ones.
Scene #3 – Amelia realizes Jet Mir scammed and imprisoned her
Even though I am the author of this book, I always get chills when re-reading fragments about Jet Mir betraying Amelia. He not only lied to her, but also held her hostage on his submarine, forcing her to sign a contract which would make her break international law multiple times, and harm other people. Even Edith (Jet Mir’s best friend and almost girlfriend, plus, a very forgiving and patient person) is completely appalled, hearing it. No wonder: Jet Mir took advantage of Amelia’s pitiful situation, to land her into an even bigger mess. She suffered much already, and didn’t deserve to be blindsided again – and yet it happened.
Scene #4 – Amelia stepping to the dark side because of Jet Mir
I’ve always wanted a novel where the villain’s right hand is the main character, and here you’ve got it. With no other choice, but to fulfill the awful contract that the man blackmailed her into signing, Amelia tries to get rid of her responsibilities as fast as possible, to break free again. This makes her live a double life: on one hand, she pretends to be a new friend of the Santa Ana Mermaids; but on the other, she lies to them almost all the time, to steal their artifacts. Look at how the negative influence of one person in her life, made her just the same. Fortunately, as Amelia meets her foil – Sawa – who’s also a traitor, she starts reflecting on herself. Late is better than never!
Scene #5 – Amelia learns the truth about Jet Mir’s exile
Even though Jet Mir showed himself from the worst side, especially at the beginning of the novel, you can’t help but feel pity for him, as you hear the story of what truly happened to him. He was an unwanted heir to the throne; the king might have killed him, but that would’ve put him in a bad light, so instead, he decided to destroy the young merman’s reputation, organizing a bloody massacre in the court, and framing him for it. Jet Mir almost lost his life in that massacre, and had to flee on his grandfather’s submarine. This was an extreme trauma for Jet Mir, who was never the same again.
Scene #6 – Amelia enters the castle courtyard’s amphitheater, destroyed by her sister’s powers
Fast forward into the novel, Amelia finally travels to her sister’s kingdom – and witnesses terrible things there. She was aware since long already that her sister isn’t exactly a good person, and that she’s a powerful witch. But as she visits the abandoned capital, and the empty royal castle with the ruined amphitheater, she realizes, her sister’s mind is more broken than she originally thought. Even though she gathers some clues, and answers, the novel ends without her knowing what was it that actually prompted Lumina to destroy the amphitheater, and flee from home.
Scene #7 – Amelia spots Hansuke, unconscious, in the middle of the sea
As Amelia is swimming back to Santa Ana, Portugal, she spots Hansuke, floating unconscious in the depths of the sea. She obviously mistakes him for his twin brother, Taisuke, who’s her karate partner, and freaks out that he’s dead. She thinks that he attempted suicide, and is completely terrified, because, she made plans earlier to become friends with him, and to help him out with his issues. Even though this scene ends up with Hansuke surviving, and creating a hilarious twist, you have to admit that your heart stopped for a moment as she was dragging him to the nearest rocks protruding from the water.
Scene #8 – The bloody mysteries of Sambath
Little is known about Sambath, one of the darkest countries in the mermaids’ world. It was very powerful once, and left several colonies; but those are far from being considered “normal” countries by the international community. Taisuke is ashamed from being from one, and mentions the “cult of blood” to Amelia. A few chapters earlier Amelia hears from Nubia about the “Sambath massacre.” Nobody knows what truly happened there, or where the capital is; and that’s what makes it one of the scariest places in the novel.
Scene #9 – Amelia fleeing from Rathana
Fast forward to the end of the book, here comes yet another scene where the poor princess needs to swim for her life; this time, escaping from a feral mermaid chasing them. Had she been caught, she might have been eaten alive.
Scene #10 – Amelia understands that her mother’s portrait is actually her grave
The moment, Lumina tells Amelia that their mother’s portrait is actually her grave, and that the whole “art gallery” of the mausoleum, is in fact a giant cemetery, and a prison – controlled by two tyrants, and a freakish, uncontrollable monster – is the most terrifying truth.’
Phew! Those were really scary. I promise that the next article will be about something nicer. And in the meantime, don’t forget to check out other listicles from this blog! You’ll love them.
