Does hearing about the second current of the first starfish give you a headache?! You’re not alone. In this article, we will explain mermaids’ system of measuring time, so that you can learn it and never get it wrong again.
Let’s begin with the term “current.” It would be our equivalent of the century, only that, it has 125 years. It’s curious why so many – does it mean that mermaids live longer than human? It could be like that.
Let’s move on to the term “starfish.” It amounts for one thousand years. Hence, one “starfish” has eight “currents.”
The first “starfish” was marked by the fall of the last colony of the Land of Mu. It corresponds to year 5000 BC.
It’s not such an old date – it was a starting point for human calendars, too. The Assyrian and Egyptian calendars begin around 4750 BC and 4241 BC respectively.
So if the first “starfish” encompasses years 5000-4000 BC, the second: years 4000-3000 BC, the third: 3000-2000 BC, etc… Then, the Anno Domini years begin in the sixth starfish (0-1000). The seventh starfish would be years 1000-2000, and the eighth: 2000-3000. Hence, year 2008 when Amelia’s history starts, belongs to the first current (125 years) of the eight starfish. In mermaid books, it’d probably be year 8008.
Following this rule, we’d say that year 2021 is in the first current of the eight starfish, hence: 8021.
Let’s take a look at another sentence:
“Yal-An-Dal was our national hero who lived in the fifth current of the sixth starfish.”
The fifth current would be anywhere from 500 to 625, and the sixth starfish: 1000-0 BC. So, it’d be 1000 minus any number from the range 500-625. Assuming that he was born in year 520 of the sixth starfish, he’d be born in 480 BC.
That was hard. Let’s check Amelia’s knowledge of the human and mermaid dating system and if she hadn’t made mistakes:
“It (Antemidia) had existed from the second current of the second starfish…”
The second starfish will be between 4000-3000 BC.
Amelia states in the next sentence that the year was 3787 BC. So, 3787 BC would be the second current of the second starfish. Correct!
Let’s go back to Anno Domini, now:
“In the era of the seventh starfish, in the fourth current…” Amelia narrates in another part of the novel.
The seventh starfish begins after year 1000, and the fourth current encompasses years from 375 to 500. Hence, it’d be 14th and 15th century. 16th century didn’t begin yet.
Interestingly, while centuries “pile up” in human calendar (and now we have the 21st), in the mermaids’ world, currents don’t follow the same rule.
Also, not all books about the mermaid world seem to follow undersea dating system. For example, in “The Sea Dynasties” by Alexander Morce, human dates are used.
