10 trivia about the mermaid race in “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” by Maxine Foti

Written by Mermaid Carlene

In this article, we will take a closer look at the supernatural race that mermaids are. To do so, we have gathered basic information available here and there throughout the book. Dive in!

  1. Saltwater mermaids need to drink water with salt frequently, otherwise, they’ll feel unwell. From this, we can deduce that mermaids’ needs for salt can vary depending on their natural habitat. If you remember, Amelia complained about the water in the Baltic Sea, stating, it was weirdly insipid. However, for Lumina, who was born there, it was probably normal.
  2. Mermaids can control their transformation with their thoughts. It seems that they transform by focusing mental power on the act. Interestingly, a mermaid can choose not to transform when she’s in the water. This was shown as Lumina came out of the sea, walking on her legs. Amelia also managed to avoid transforming showering.
  3. Mermaids aren’t afraid of rain at all; however, that doesn’t mean that they enjoy cold weather! Mermaids from tropical countries, like Amelia, definitely don’t like lower temperature and prefer living closer to the equator. Interestingly, mermaids used to living in colder climates, tend to choose colder places for themselves to live – for example, Irene from Kara Sea didn’t like living in Santa Ana, Portugal, and ended up moving to Chicago, which is in North America.
  4. As mermaids leave the water to live on land, the first days are typically the worst, as their skin feels dry and itchy. That could have a lot to do with the climate, though. If Amelia had come out on land in another geographical area, where air is more humid, she probably wouldn’t complain so much.
  5. Besides caudal fin, mermaids also have side fins (and ear fins). They don’t pay any role, besides helping emotional expression. Amelia always moves her side fins when feeling delighted.
  6. Mermaids tend to prefer fish and seafood over other foods. It’s highly likely that they find meat and eggs weird and exotic – exactly like we feel sometimes about odd sea creatures that don’t appear on our tables often.
  7. Mermaids are resistant to nausea after swimming. They never get ill if they eat and then have to swim somewhere. It’s unsure, though, whether they’re resistant to motion sickness on land.
  8. All mermaids have good voice. However, it takes concentration to sing beautifully. If a mermaid is stressed, she can’t let out the legendary voice.
  9. Mermaids have several supernatural powers. They can hypnotize others and they have well-developed sixth sense. Some can go as far as to controlling energies and elements, but that takes spiritual practice. A mermaid who managed to evoke fire underwater, was Kamadia.
  10. All mermaids and mermen look beautiful and attractive. This is probably related to their beautiful, colorful eyes, tails and hair. Some have naturally dyed nails, too, as Amelia mentions on one occasion.
