Mermaid Seraphine
Baltic amber was created over 45 million years ago from a resin that underwent an oxidation process. Due to the warming of the climate, conifers growing on the shores of the Scandinavian Peninsula began to produce more resin, in which also insects and flower petals were preserved. Sea currents direct this amber from the north to the south and discharge it onto the sandy beaches of Poland and other Central European countries with access to the sea.
Baltic amber has played an important role for many eras. Jewelery and ornaments (mainly devotional items) were made of it, but it was also added to perfumes and medicines. To this day, it is the national pride of Poles.
In Polish folklore, we can find several legends about the origin and importance of amber. The most interesting comes from the times when Poland was crossed by the so-called “The Amber Trail.” Exactly – the Chinese had silk, and the Poles – amber.
In the vicinity of Hel Peninsula, under the water, there was a beautiful palace of the Baltic queen gracefully named Jurata. She was the patron of the fishermen, and she helped them with their fishing, commanding the waves and the winds. When she heard a young man singing thanks, she fell in love with him. She started going ashore to kiss him. Unfortunately, their hot feeling did not please the local god of the Seas and Earth. He sent lightning on the amber palace of Jurata, which disintegrated into small pieces. Since then, the sea regularly sheds amber crumbs. Their presence saved many Polish fishermen from hunger.
Interestingly, Sawa – the mermaid princess from the South Baltic Sea described in the novel “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” – wore a silver ring with an amber. It is not known, however, whether she was related to Jurata in any way, probably not.
It is known, however, that Maxine appreciates amber jewelry, and she has bought it more than once as a gift. If you are looking for similar ideas, you can find more inspiration for mermaid gifts in here.
