Name: Mewa Zielińska, but we first meet her as Meevani Thakur.
Mermaid kingdom: Southern Baltic.
Age: Her age isn’t stated.
Occupation: Younger mermaid princess of the Southern Baltic, who lives a vagabond life. She first stayed in Santa Ana, but then started roaming the world in Jet Mir’s submarine.
Looks as human: We never get to see Mewa as a human. However, she’s got pale complexion like her older sister Sawa, and soft, curly reddish hair.
Looks as mermaid: Meevani is described as a mermaid with white-gold tail. Because she’s Sawa’s sister, we can assume that her tail is also related to the herring and that she simply used paint to make it look more golden. When Amelia first saw her, in Jet Mir’s submarine, she was wearing a sari in warm tonalities.
Personality: Mewa has an adventurous spirit and she seems to be a friendly person who cares for people next to her. Except that, not much is known about her.
Interests: Mewa definitely loves travelling. She also enjoys silly games such as “the one who holds the paperweight is a sponge.”
Best friends: Mewa appears to be good friends friends with Namya, Meghna, Araminta, Sawa and Jet Mir.
Trivia:
- Mewa means “seagull” in Polish, and Zielińska is a surname related to the Polish word “zieleń” meaning “green.”
- Interestingly, in Polish, “w” is read as “v” so Mewa and Sawa’s names should be read as “Meva” and “Sava.”
- Mewa’s desperate dream to travel around the world made her, her sister and Jet Mir stage her kidnapping. Mewa couldn’t “willingly” join Jet Mir, after most mermaids from Santa Ana decided that they wouldn’t support his cause.
- Edith probably knew about that staged kidnapping. Amelia comments, Edith likely didn’t believe in it, because she, just like Sawa, knew that Jet Mir could be trusted. It’s unknown though, why Sawa, Mewa and Jet Mir, did this all, without telling anything to Edith. Perhaps, they had believed, Edith was more on Davika’s side.
Mewa Zielińska in “Stories from the Undersea World of Mermaid Princess Amelia, Vol. 1”
Mewa appears in “Stories from the Undersea World of Mermaid Princess Amelia, Vol. 1”, in particular, in Sawa Zielińska’s story. Mewa is Sawa’s younger sister, who catches on Sawa’s passion for traveling. While Sawa grows out of it, Mewa remains an eager traveler.
Mewa Zielińska in “Stories from the Undersea World of Mermaid Princess Amelia, Vol. 2”
In “Stories from the Undersea World of Mermaid Princess Amelia, Vol. 2” Mewa gets her own story as part of Jet Mir’s crew, which sets her to meet Amelia in “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Losst Symphony.”
In this story, Mewa is described as a mermaid princess from the cold northern waters of Bursztynia who has abandoned her royal duties to live aboard a golden submarine. She has striking red hair that streams behind her like flame, a face dotted with freckles that become more prominent when she’s flushed, and silver tail scales that she dyes gold but which show their natural color as the dye fades.
Mewa is deeply conflicted—she feels the weight of her royal upbringing pressing down on her yet revels in the freedom of her nomadic existence. She is sentimental and collects objects that reflect her fragmented self: a stolen pirate t-shirt, tattoo designs she’s sketched, cheap jewelry, and most importantly, books.
She has a passionate, romantic soul, devouring Sirense Glimmerich’s polyamorous mermaid adventures and writing long, honest letters to Aleixo in Portugal. She struggles with her divided loyalties between her past life, her present family on the submarine, and her impossible love for a human boy.
Despite her occasional melancholy, she possesses royal self-defense training (which she uses to break Felipe’s nose) and growing courage shaped by her experiences in exile.
