Ever searched for a new hobby that could help you express your mermaid self? Look no more! This article discusses various mermaid hobbies which were described in “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” by Maxine Foti. (Don’t worry, though – you can enjoy these activities without investing into diving equipment!)
Despite the plethora of responsibilities in the underwater world, there are several fun activities that merfolk from “Mermaid Princess Amelia” novel indulges in. These hobbies pertain to both the mermaids in the underwater world, and on land. Several characters, such as Edith, Nubia, Greene, Garabel, Tony, Sawa and Aramintha have developed interests in specific fields, and free from the demands of work, they voluntarily engage in these activities. The hobbies include, but are not limited to, painting marine scenes, running by the seaside, cooking seafood, advanced singing, collecting mermaids book, or crafting jewelry and sewing unique outfits…
Let’s look at these in closer detail now.
Mermaid hobby #1 – Painting marine landscapes
The art of painting marine landscapes is Edith’s favorite hobby. She expresses ideas and emotions in a visual language, and this can be evident in her apartment, covered with mythological scenes depicting various mermaids. The first thing people notice when entering, is the remarkable image of master Dragomir with his young wife, Ivana, a scene inspired by the historical record of the Black Sea. She also paints for her friends, for example, she painted a portrait of national heroine Agleia for Amelia’s sixteenth birthday.
Mermaid hobby #2 – Training sports by the seaside
For more athletic girls like Edith’s close friend Nubia, I’d recommend jogging or training yoga by the seaside, and inviting more sporty friends to make the experience more fun. In the novel, both Nubia and Amelia have commendable stamina and velocity which lets them enjoy sports together. They like running and swimming long distances, which can be seen in their journeys through the ocean.
Mermaid hobby #3 – Cooking sea-food
For those who have just returned from their workout, it’s time for a mermaid meal. I never even thought that seafood cooking could be a hobby, until, I read about Greene Grant, otherwise known as Guo Guiying. She’s a Chinese waitress working in an electic Asian restaurant known as the Jade Dragon, who loves preparing shrimp spring rolls, and grilled fish in vegetables. Greene is actually an exchange student living an adventure in Portugal. However, she works at the restaurant because of her love for different dishes – and also because, the place reminds her of her kingdom.
If you are just trying to lose weight, this might not be the best hobby for you, though. Try singing instead! It’s said to be burning some calories, and you can do it from your home.
Mermaid hobby #4 – Singing and playing harp
Garabel Haldane, a Scottish Sea noblewoman who’s also one of the most famous opera divas in the Atlantic, will surely be your inspiration. She is a talented singer, voracious for success, who wants to become popular as soon as possible. Amelia attended (and ruined) her performance in a ballet show in Vale de Santa Ana. But don’t worry! She surely won’t bother you. 😉
If you are musical, you can also get inspired with Araminta’s interest in ancient music. She plays the harp, which is definitely one of the best instruments for fantasy lovers.
Mermaid hobby #5 – Read mermaid stories
But what if you’re a mermaid, who’s more of an introvert? Then, you’ll want to follow Sawa’s steps. Sawa has a particular interest in reading and collecting books about mermaids. She runs an antique bookshop in Santa Ana from which Davika got the book that revealed Amelia’s connection to Nerland. Interestingly, Sawa’s wide book collection contains not only publications written in all languages, but also maps and ancient scrolls.
Mermaid hobby #6 – Sewing your own clothes
Got little books, but your wardrobe is bursting at the seams? You’re not alone, fashion is another hobby for Tony, Amelia’s long best friend and runner-up love interest. Tony works for Alissa, the court stylist, and he is responsible for importing rare materials and precious jewelry, which she uses in her newest projects. Sometimes, Alissa sends him to the Turquoise Sands, sometimes, to the Gulf of Tonkin; on other occasion, he had to visit the Polynesian waters, or the Peruvian Trenches. He happily traveled around the world in search of fashionable items. What a life! I envy him.
