Amelia and Lumina, step-sisters and legitimate rulers of Nerland, a mysterious mermaid county in the Baltic Sea, took over a dozen years to finally meet. Their common parent was their mother, Nerland Queen Marzia Mond, but they were daughters of two different men.
Lumina’s biological dad is Merman Prince Andreas II, from the Northern Baltic. For the moment, it’s not known how he looked like. But there’s a great chance that he had steel grey eyes just like his daughter, Lumina.
Amelia’s dad is an Antemidian photographer named Adavan Vega, from whom she inherited her turquoise tail with fresh green stripes at the caudal fin. This trait revealed different fathers of the sisters and because of it, Amelia had to disappear from the Nerlandese court, where the royal physician declared her dead at birth.
After that, Amelia would be given to Vera Feher, a friend of Marzia’s who, was supposed to meet Adavan in Antemidia, and give him the daughter. Unfortunately, lost her somewhere on the way, and the baby grew up in the care of Alisha, a foster aunt who stayed with her until she was chosen princess of Antemidia. Unlike Lumina, she never knew anything about her original family.
Meanwhile, Lumina never stopped longing for her lost sister which, added to the exhausting routine of the solitary, princely life that had left her very little time for herself, caused her to experience unhappiness. Which, in turn, led her to a breaking point in the famous “April Night,” in 2001, when she destroyed the royal amphitheater in the inner courtyard of the Dusterburg Castle. Afterwards, she escaped from home to go in search of her sister who, she felt, was still alive. It took her more years though than she would have wished for…
They met years later. Lumina learned that Amelia would help Jet Mir in his quest for the artifacts, and aware of the danger, Lumina presented herself to her sister, adopting the role of the villain, wearing a mask of indifference and coldness which was very different from her true feelings – all with the intention of scaring Amelia, dissuading her from her mission, and keeping her safe. It’s interesting to note that while Lumina pointed out to Amelia that they aren’t truly sisters (maybe in an attempt to fake indifference even further?), Amelia always considers her as one. She never calls Lumina as her step-sister, instead, calling her “sister,” even when they argued.
This could be related to the fact that for Amelia, finding her family and reconnecting with it was always so important that she was willing to ignore the fact that her only sister was in fact a step-sister.
At first, Lumina succeeded at driving Amelia away. But it didn’t take long for Amelia to regain her motivation and seek truth. She ended up discovering that her sister only meant to take care of her and keep her safe.
When they found themselves together in the Mausoleum of the Lost Symphonies, they were able to communicate, and Lumina told Amelia the truth about their family and Amelia’s past. After that, though, the sisters interacted very little, though, and Lumina still has several secrets and questions that she hasn’t answered for Amelia.
Despite everything, it’s safe to assume that they both love each other very much. Lumina is willing to go anywhere and do whatever it takes, to protect her little sister. Amelia still isn’t quite used to the idea of having a sibling, but she’s more than willing to open her heart, get to know her, and make up for all those years spent apart.
We hope to see their bond grow in the next novels of the “Mermaid Princess Amelia” series. We also hope to learn more about Nerland, Lumina’s mysterious country.
