Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony is a novel that features certain themes of rivalry, both between people who are related, and those that never even met, but are connected to each other in some way. This article looks at five most important pairs of rivals that show up throughout the novel. Some of them you can surely guess; but can you guess all? See yourself!
5 surprising rivalries from “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” by Maxine Foti.
Amelia Quintana vs Tikalie Uxmal
Surprised? Definitely. The rivalry between Amelia and her predecessor, Tikalie, may not seem that obvious at first glance. Mostly because the two princesses never meet in person, and Amelia has tremendous respect for Tikalie and everything that she’s achieved.
However, in her private conversations with her sister Lumina, Amelia doesn’t hesitate to criticize some of Tikalie’s choices, and state that she’d never act that way. To that, she makes it very clear that she plans to be a princess until the end (like Tikalie), and that her goal is to be very powerful. It looks like, Amelia’s rivalry isn’t truly about beating her at the present moment, but doing so over time.
Lumina Mond vs Jet Mir Thakur
Lumina and Jet Mir meet in person only once, but their rivalry is real, and affecting them both. Both have very important reasons to gather the artifacts, reasons related to their pasts. Interestingly, Jet Mir never considers Lumina a big threat, and even though he knows that his sisters work for her know, he doesn’t make a fuss out of this fact. Unfortunately for him, it’s this that ultimately leads him to lose. Lumina turns out to be smarter (or rather, more inclined to pray dirty). She steals all artifacts, which infuriates him. However, he doesn’t keep a grudge, knowing that he wouldn’t gain anything from arriving at the Mausoleum first.
Edith Dvali vs Davika Thani
I really love the rivalry between these two, especially because, it’s not visible right away. These two girls have each others’ backs most of the time, and trust each other. Even though the main reason why the two split apart is Edith’s love for Jet Mir, it would be an understatement to say that there weren’t other factors at play. Edith and Davika are both competing to be the leader of the Santa Ana mermaids. Even though it may seem like Edith has a lesser position, things change as the team begins disintegrating. By teaming up with Amelia, and making a conscious choice to give artifacts to Jet Mir, Edith shows that she’s able to make her own judgment and that she’s not willing to do everything that Davika says. Later, by becoming even closer friends with Amelia – and Lara, Edith shows that she can make her new friends, even though, her old ones disregard her. Ultimately, Edith wins against Davika, as she’s a kind, mature, friendly, and empathetic person.
Taisuke Hayama vs Cristovao Orta
The rivalry between Taisuke and Cristovao is a purely competitive one. Taisuke doesn’t hate Cristovao; he never complains about him to Amelia, and neither his best friend, Jayden, states that there’s some problem between the two. However, it is a fact that the two fight each other like hungry sharks. Even though their fights are quite brutal and Taisuke seems to be one who always loses, the two young men never take their fights outside of the mat, and stick to fair play rules.
Adavan Vega vs Andreas Mond
These two men competed for the heart of Marzia Mond, the great queen of Nerland, and both gifted her daughters: Amelia and Lumina. Marzia had an affair with Adavan, as Amelia was born, one that she managed to hide quite successfully; Adavan eventually left Nerland, and Marzia remained with her husband, Andreas.
However later, Andreas vanished without trace. What happened to him? In “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony,” Amelia attempted to ask her sister about her dad. Lumina replied that it shouldn’t concern her, and left the topic be. However, since she had rather positive interactions with Amelia’s father, Adavan, it’s likely that the man didn’t have anything to do with the disappearance of Andreas.
Final word on rivalry between characters in “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” by Maxine Foti
As you can see, the rivalry present in the book happens between very different people, some coming from very distant countries! What truly fuels the rivalry, is each rival’s desire to emerge as the victorious one.
One certain competition between characters, such as the one between Lumina and Jet Mir, get solved with the end of the novel, others remain active, or on hold. What will be of Edith and Davika’s friendship, now? Will Taisuke ever defeat Cristovao? And what is it that happened to Lumina’s father? Is he alive? If yes, where is he? Hopefully, you’ll learn more about it in the next novels of Mermaid Princess Amelia fantasy series.
