Important things to know before trying a mermaid cosplay photoshoot (The ABC of planning a successful mermaid cosplay)

Written by Mermaid Lily

Ever since “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony,” mermaids are all the rage in pop culture and people have been cosplaying them for months already. If you are going to cosplay as a mermaid, we recommend that you follow these steps for a successful look:

  • Buy a silicone mermaid tail (more info on how to choose the best tail here)
  • Buy a ready mermaid costume bra OR decorate your own swimsuit bra
  • Do your hair, nails and make-up, and wear sea-themed jewelry
  • Use props such as a mermaid scrapbook in a textile sachet with shells.

Of course, this is a very short list – if you need more detailed information on how one can achieve a perfect mermaid look, check out this article. I don’t want to delve into this topic here, because, I’d like to tackle other cosplay-related topics that are important, too.

After you’ve got the perfect look more or less designed, make sure that there are no laws that would prohibit you from wearing the costume in your area.

If there aren’t, and it is possible for you to cosplay outside, make sure to check weather conditions in advance. Also, remember that the perfect nature spot for a mermaid cosplay doesn’t need to be the beach. It can also be rocks, or the shore of a pond, lake or river. In general, as long as you choose a location that’s near water, you should be all set.

If you’d like to do your cosplay in a swimming pool, first ask for permission. You wouldn’t want to breach any swimming pool rules and end up with a huge fine!

If it’s not possible for you to cosplay outside, don’t despair. You can always do the cosplay in your own bathtub, or at a friend’s private pool. Renting an apartment with a hot tub for a day is also an option, albeit an expensive one. Last but not least, don’t forget anime conventions and dress-up parties!

Next, whether you are planning to cosplay outside or not, we recommend having somebody that can assist you. A friend can help make sure that you’re wearing your costume right and help with walking. They may also safeguard your clothes and personal belongings, so you don’t have to sit around worrying whether they’re safe.

Once your cosplay’s perfect and you’re in the right setting, you will surely want to take some great photos. Again, we recommend having the help of a friend. But if you don’t have anybody that could help, you can always use a selfie stick or mount the camera on a tripod and set it in such a way that it takes photos automatically.

Once all of your photos are ready, don’t forget to edit them and add the right filters. Sometimes, it may be all that you need to add a magical atmosphere. Have fun and don’t forget to send us photos of all the characters from Mermaid Princess Amelia that you and your friends cosplayed!
