Do the characters in The Mermaid Princess Amelia face modern teenage problems?

Although we don’t want to unnecessarily promote the stereotype of challenging adolescence – it doesn’t need to be the case! – it’s difficult to find a teenager who genuinely enjoys this life period. Everyone has some problems: if not in the family, then at school; if not with studying, then with self-esteem.

If you’ve read Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony, you know that a lot of the cast consists of teenagers (or very young adults). All of them face different problems. Let’s look at what they’re going through, in case you were wondering whether the novel is a good fit for your teenage daughter.

Teenage problem #1 – School

Amelia was a good student in the past. However, during her princess training, she’s got trouble memorizing the names and flags of undersea countries, and having the talented Tikalie as her predecessor and role model, doesn’t make it any easier. Upon moving on land, things get worse for her: she’s bad at Portuguese and we can only guess that because of it, her school grades aren’t the best ones. Still, she takes school seriously and doesn’t avoid classes unless she absolutely has to.

Teenage problem #2 – Family

A character that has very complicated relationship with her family, is Lumina. Her father disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and her relationship with her mother, filled with endless fights and arguments, was no better. Lumina was so unhappy that in the end, she ran away from home. She did her best to avenge her mother’s death later on, and also to protect her younger sister, which shows, she cared deeply about her family, despite grudges.

Teenage problem #3 – Disappointing friendships

All adolescents want to be popular, and so they look for friends. Unfortunately, finding and keeping those is not that easy. A character who went through plenty of disappointment in this area of life is Edith, even though, she’s the nicest and most mature teenage girl in the novel. Jet Mir left suddenly; Davika and Irene were upset with her romantic choices; Kamadia went missing; and Sawa and Amelia both lied to her. Even though all of this was awful, Edith remained a kind, friendly and forgiving girl.

Teenage problem #4 – Unfriendly environment

Lara has got a carefree personality and a great sense  of humor, but that doesn’t mean her life is free from trouble. She grew up in a hostile society, full of arrogant hypocrites concerned only with their own fortunes. Lara fervently sought romantic relationships, hoping that they’d give her a reason to move out from her country, forever.

It’s worth noting, though, that oftentimes only one bad person in the environment, is enough to make one’s life complete hell. This is the case of Tony who, being low-born, became the target of malicious reproaches from General Aalona, a person he couldn’t oppose, for she was one of his country’s three rulers.

Teenage problem #5 – Depression

Taisuke went through a period of depression after his friends died in some sort of accident. He grieved them for a long time, and his complicated relationship with his twin brother, Hansuke, didn’t help him heal, at all.

Another depressed person from the novel is Kamadia. A naturally sweet and energetic girl, she became emotionally numb, hopeless and cynical during her stay at the Mausoleum. The loss of personal freedom and grief over everything that was lost strongly affected her moods.

It’s worth mentioning, though, that there’s something good in every life lesson, even the most difficult ones – and this, is clearly show in the novel.

Amelia grew up a lot during her adventures and learned several new things. Lumina realized that protecting family was the most important thing. Edith made true friends, and Lara and Tony found people who’d support them, too. Taisuke and Kamadia found back their happiness, and decided to move forward with a more optimistic outlook.

Having said all this, you may be wondering why we haven’t mentioned crushes anywhere here. “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” is a novel where romance doesn’t play an important part. Even though there are some couples, we get very little insight  into their relationships. Maxine decided to leave love matters for next books, when her characters get older.
