Name: Sawa Zielińska
Mermaid kingdom: Southern Baltic.
Age: Her age isn’t stated
Occupation: Self-employed in her own bookshop in Santa Ana, Portugal. Also, older mermaid princess of the Southern Baltic.
Looks as human: She’s a young woman with pale complexion and orange-red hair. She seems to enjoy boho fashion. When Amelia first meets her for the first time, she wears a long gray dress, and when Amelia meets her for the second time, she wears skinny brown pants, a long woolen poncho, plus a decorative string on her forehead. However, she also owns silver jewelry with amber.
Looks as mermaid: Sawa’s tail is similar to the herring’s.
Personality: Sawa is a withdrawn and quite mysterious person. She mostly keeps to herself, and doesn’t jump at the first opportunity to socialize. She’s quite protective of her boundaries. However, that doesn’t mean, she’s unapproachable. She’s a great source of information and support for Amelia, who has no idea, how to tackle her mission. It is also thanks to Sawa’s book collection that Amelia learns more about her real ancestry. Interestingly, Sawa is also a good liar, and she doesn’t have trouble keeping multiple secrets. She seems calm and composed even when she’s about to be unmasked, which points to the fact that she has nerves of steel.
Interests: Sawa’s favorite hobbies are reading and studying maps.
Best friends: Sawa doesn’t seem to be best friends with anybody, but she has positive relationship with most mermaids from Santa Ana, her younger sister Mewa, and Jet Mir.
Trivia:
- Sawa got the name after a Polish legend. The legend told the story of a man named Wars and his lover, a courageous mermaid named Sawa. Together, their names created the word Wars-sawa, which was later changed to Warszawa, and is the local name of Poland’s capital, Warsaw.
- Interestingly, in Polish, “W” is read as “v” so Sawa and Mewa’s names should be read as “Sava” and “Meva.”
- Sawa doesn’t seem too protective of her younger sister, Mewa. On the contrary, she trusts that the girl can make her own decisions.
- Sawa seems to be great friends with Jet Mir. Perhaps because they are both hermits who prefer being alone in closed spaces.
- Sawa is the only character in the novel who smokes. She prefers thin cigarettes and is often seen with one.
