Hailand is a fictional mermaid state, said to be located in the easternmost part of the Baltic Sea. It’s neighboring with Nerland, and maybe also with the Southern Baltic, but that hasn’t been confirmed.

Not much is known about Hailand. There’s no mention of the ruler, however, whomever they are, they have good diplomatic contacts with the Bermuda Triangle, a fellow mermaid country. Bermuda Triangle’s Queen, Larimara Lanorth, needed to collect some important documents from Hailand, so she sent there her daughter Lara. The mission was successful, Lara collected the documents without any problems.

Because Hailand is part of the Baltic Sea, it probably has cold and unsalty waters.

Hailand, known in its original tongue as the Marine Cross Country, represents one of the most aggressive and expansionist nations in the Baltic Sea region. Its international name comes from the Nerlandese term meaning “the land of the sharks,” a fitting description for a kingdom with a reputation for predatory expansion. The capital Crossburg, located in the northern region, features a bustling merchant city centered around a historic castle that serves as both residence and administrative center of the Marine Cross Church. The population is striking, with light blue hair and striking blue eyes, while traditional dress includes women’s headdresses and bodices, and men’s wide-brimmed hats and doublets.

The Knights of the Marine Cross stand as the most formidable force in the region, recognizable by their white habits with bold black crosses on the chest and their formidable swords. During medieval times, this order was known for aggressive expansion, claiming southeastern territories along the shores of Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. The order’s wealth manifests in vast estates and castles scattered across the Baltic Region, with elaborate networks of secret passages within fortresses and intricate codes and symbols for communication. Rural areas remain predominantly agricultural, with limited access to modern resources, their residents living in small communities centered around churches affiliated with the Marine Cross Order. The Cross Language blends old Baltic variations with Estonian and Latvian elements, reflecting the diverse cultural heritage of the region.

Hailand’s relationship with Nerland remains tense, rooted in historical conflicts when Hailand and the Southern Baltic launched an assault on Nerland’s northern provinces. Subsequent generations continue to attack in hopes of reclaiming land, and the region remains divided between those who want to join Hailand and those who value independence. Prince Xylemander Helderhoffe serves as Hailand’s representative, his presence in Nerland demonstrating the ongoing diplomatic dance between these neighboring powers.
