There are many mermaid organizations in the world of Mermaid Princess Amelia. Some are amateur and private, while others are associated with various underwater countries. Some stay in charge of managing international relations, and some serve as a link between land and sea. In this article, we discuss seven that appeared in the first novel of the Mermaid Princess Amelia series.
Antemidian Council of Generals: Antemidia is governed by a group of generals who share power (more or less equally). The state functions similarly to the Roman republic, in which two consuls shared full powers and greater authority over the senate. Three of the generals, Aalona, Asvald and Esteban, carry most power, which they later share with a princess: sometimes noble, sometimes elected from among the people, who has no real political power until she is 25 years old.
Antemidian CONCH: CONCH stands for Current Oceanic Neighborhood Crisis Helpline, but in Spanish, the name is known as MAR (SEA): Movimiento de Avisos y Respuestas, and in Italian, as ONDA (WAVE): L’Organizzazione Nazionale Degli Avvisi). The CONCH was founded by Antemidian princess Ximena III with the aim of providing an easy share of information between underwater communities, publishing important information leaflets about possible natural disasters and warning the population to take appropriate preventive measures in case of disaster.
Nerlandese TUNA: the acronym TUNA stands for Temporary Union of the Nerlandese in the Atlantic. It’s not known from the novel what TUNA does, but judging by its name, it probably gathers migrants from Nerland who live abroad. Amelia, Lara, Edith, and Nubia all posed as members of this body during their visit to Düsterburg, Nerland, Baltic Sea.
The Global Ocean’s Council and Global Ocean’s Army: The Global Ocean’s Council and its Global Ocean’s Army is an international organization of undersea kingdoms and countries, comparable to the human world’s United Nations. It looks like, the Global Ocean’s Council handles the most important political relations in the global ocean, and is a large-scale force of law and order, built to prevent abuses of power between nations and eliminate potential threats and wars before the situation could escalate, and become very dangerous. The military of the Global Ocean’s Army possesses high-tech submarines, heavy weaponry, numerous troops and divisions of warriors trained to deal with savage sirens, and other problems.
The voluntary division protecting mermaid princesses on land is, on the other hand, a private organization gathering volunteers who want to protect undersea royalty during their stays on land. The members are very caring and offer free help to everybody, even those who, like Mermaid Princess Amelia, know how to take care of themselves.
The Underground is a secret, privately managed organization for mermaids and mermen. The one based in Santa Ana, Portugal, is managed by Darren Klar and Knossa Oligaris, and its function is to help mermaids during their stay on land, by offering them documents such as ID cards, passports, medical permits, and so on. All those documents, even though fake, help them go unnoticed and avoid getting discovered by humans suspecting the existence of mermaids.
The Sea-Land Post is an underwater organization that makes it possible to send letters and parcels from mermaids to humans. Mermaids send their packages to the nearest underwater Sea-Land Post office, which sends them to the closest headquarters on land, where those packages are dried, packed anew, and forwarded to different mail box addressees. Those addresses are often fictitious companies, shops, or offices, and their only real function is to deliver the post to the receiver.
There are surely many more organizations in the undersea world of Mermaid Princess Amelia. We hope to see more in the next novels of the series! Who knows, perhaps, they’ll have funny names such as TUNA, too?
