Niran Thani in “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony”
Niran Thani is Davika’s older brother from the Thai Pearl Empire.
He also lives in Portugal, and he was in charge of the family’s artifact: a precious conch brought from the Gulf of Carpentaria by his and Davika’s father.
The artifact was later stolen by Lumina. However, Davika accused Amelia of it. It is highly likely that he got back the artifact after Amelia, Lumina and others returned from the Mausoleum of the Lost Symphonies.

In Davika’s Story:
Life in Bangkok
Niran is Davika’s older brother, a merman who left the Thai Pearl Empire at eighteen to live on land in Bangkok, seeking escape from the “suffocating feminine reality of the underwater kingdoms.” He is pragmatic, light-hearted, and detached, providing a sense of security for Davika during her visit. Physically, he has naturally blond hair, which he dyes black to blend in with humans, showing his roots when stressed.
Friendship with Somchai
His character is defined by his fascination with human technology and his aspiration to be part of the future. He sees his human roommate, Somchai, as a person from the future, embodying “technological advancement.” Niran is highly intelligent and resourceful, becoming an “ultimate undercover student” by sneaking into multiple university majors across Bangkok without formal enrollment, with the help of friends. He and Somchai are avid participants in hackathons, and he has a talent for coding, with Somchai insisting his skills could take him to Silicon Valley.
Dreams of future and technology
His ultimate dream is to work in the global technology industry, believing that “computers are the future” and that the mermaid world is “at least 100 years behind.” He pleads with Davika to convince their mother to let him go abroad, fearing that returning to Wimalai would be “wasting my life.” He is messy and somewhat oblivious to domestic chores, as evidenced by the state of his apartment and the pungent sock that horrifies Davika. Despite his desire to break from tradition, he is a caring brother, patiently explaining human concepts like email to Davika and looking out for her well-being while she is on land.

Trivia about Niran Thani:
- According to his own words in Davika’s Story (Stories from the Undersea World of Mermaid Princess Amelia, Vol. 2), Niran is not gay, and his relationship with Somchai is purely platonic. When Davika directly asks if he is “head over fins for that guy,” Niran’s reaction is definitive: “What?” he responded, seeming disgusted by the sole suggestion. ‘No!!!’” His reason for living in Bangkok and with Somchai is his passion for technology and his dream of reaching Silicon Valley. Although there is no evidence in the story to suggest their bond is romantic, Niran could be secretly gay and hiding it from Davika and his mother.
