HAI HUN
Hai Hun, whose name means “sea ghost” in Chinese, was a notorious pirate from the South China Sea who commanded the Sea Jade, the grandest and most opulent vessel of the Oriental Pirates Consortium during the nineteenth century. His ship was rumored to be unsinkable and intended as a prestigious symbol of wealth and power, though it inevitably met its fate by sinking into a tight crevasse at the sea border between the Gulf of Tonkin and South China Sea. Hai Hun’s legend lived on through a secret message purportedly left by him, which became the basis for a treasure hunt game at the Sea Pirates’ Camp, where young merchildren sought his fictional loot—a wooden chest containing a broken spyglass, a fake letter not even written in Chinese, and hundreds of fish bones. The wreck of his famous vessel, the Sea Jade, remained unrecovered for over a century until it was eventually deconstructed and taken by the Global Ocean’s Research and Culture Institution, which labeled it an artifact for academic research.
