King Witold I Zieliński is a historical sovereign of Bursztynia, the amber‑rich mermaid kingdom located in the Baltic Sea. He is the grandfather of Sawa and the brother of Princess Salomea. He reigned in the 17th century, a time when the Baltic mermaids were already jealously guarding their amber against human encroachment. King Witold I is credited with the creation of the royal gardens of Bursztynia, which he designed in a harmonious mixture of formal and natural styles – a landscape of elegant classical arches, a tranquil resting square, an old orangery where they attempted to grow orange trees underwater, and most famously, the undersea roses in cream, pink, and tea‑coloured hues that have made the gardens renowned throughout the Baltic Sea. He is also the builder of the Temple of Princess Salomea, dedicated to his younger sister, which he filled with intricate frescoes, a chandelier of metallic vines with amber cherries, and a secret ceiling panel that opens only with a special ring. No physical description of King Witold I is given – we do not know his tail colour, his hair, or his features – but his legacy is monumental.
