Endearing, Hilarious And Ironic Character Nicknames From “The Undersea World Of Mermaid Princess Amelia, Vol.1” by Maxine Foti

Nicknames can be a fun way to show affection or emphasize someone’s unique qualities. They can also be a way to bond with friends and family over shared experiences or inside jokes.

Some nicknames are simple variations of a person’s name, while others are completely unrelated to their birth name. Regardless of how they originated, nicknames often stick with us for years and become a part of our identity.

For some people, having a nickname can be a source of personal pride, and also a way to stand out from the crowd, actually. Others may feel embarrassed or uncomfortable with their nickname, especially if it is one they do not particularly care for.

In some cases, nicknames can even be hurtful or offensive, so it is important to be mindful of how we use them and to respect others’ wishes if they do not want to be called by a certain name.

Despite their potential drawbacks, nicknames are generally a lighthearted way to interact with others. They can make us feel more connected to those around us and can provide a sense of belonging.

So, the next time someone gives you a nickname, embrace it and wear it proudly! After all, it’s a sign that you are loved and appreciated for the unique person that you are.

Character Nicknames From ‘The Undersea World Of Mermaid Princess Amelia, Vol.1’

In the underwater world of Mermaid Princess Amelia, nicknames play an important role in defining the characters and their personalities.

In ‘The Undersea World of Mermaid Princess Amelia, Vol.1’, we encounter a wide range of characters, each with their own unique nickname that reflects their individual traits and quirks.

Check them out, and perhaps you’ll get inspired to find your next nickname, too!

Samantha – Sam

Samantha’s nickname Sam is a simple and straightforward variation of her birth name. It is a common nickname for people named Samantha, and it reflects a more casual and friendly tone compared to the full name.

In the first story collection from the Undersea World of Mermaid Princess Amelia, we see that Samantha’s friends Lumina and Tikalie both call her by her nickname, Sam.

This suggests that she is comfortable with her nickname and that it is a term of endearment among her friends. What do you think about the nickname Sam? Do you prefer Sam to Samantha?

Poseyda – Seyda

Poseyda’s nickname Seyda is a unique variation of her name that is likely a term of endearment among her friends and family.

In her story, we see that Thalassa is one of the first people who call her Seyda, and this immediately suggests that they have a close friendship. Thalassa’s use of the nickname when Poseyda sits next to her in school also shows that Seyda is a comfortable and natural way for her friends to refer to her.

It’s interesting to note that Thalassa is not the only one who calls Poseyda Seyda. Mara, Kostas, and Vasilakis also use the nickname, indicating that it is a common way for those close to Poseyda to refer to her.

Even Poseyda’s mother calls her daughter Seyda, which suggests that the nickname may have originated from her family. It seems the name is here to stay, regardless of who started it!

Thalassa – Thala

Guess what? Thalassa is not left out in having a nickname. Her friends call her Thala. It’s possible that this nickname serves a practical rather than affectionate purpose, as Thala is a shorter and easier-to-pronounce version of Thalassa, a version that can easily be used in casual conversation or in situations where time is limited.

Tikalie – Tiki

Even our legendary elective princess has got a nickname! Tikalie was called Tiki only once in the first story collection, though; thus, it is not clear if all her close friends call her like that or if it’s just Samantha.

The nickname Tiki for the name Tikalie is a good choice. Tiki is a short, easy-to-remember nickname that is derived from Tikalie’s name. It has a fun and playful sound to it that could reflect a person who is outgoing, adventurous, and full of energy, which fits Tikalie’s true personality.

Additionally, Tiki has a cultural reference to Polynesian mythology, where it refers to a carved wooden figure representing a supernatural being. This could add a unique and exotic flair to the nickname and make it even more special to the person who bears it.

Lumina – Edgy Kid

Tikalie and Samantha both used to call Lumina an edgy kid. This nickname might easily trigger a sensitive person but Lumina seemed to accept it; she never complained or told her friends to stop calling her that; but she did tell Tikalie that she didn’t want her Antemidian name to be Anna. The reason why Lumina didn’t like the name was that she found it too popular. So, she may have liked the nickname edgy kid because of its quirkiness.

Still, the term “edgy” often implies a negative connotation and can be associated with someone who is rebellious, confrontational, or provocative. It could also suggest a person who is prone to taking risks or engaging in dangerous behavior.

It’s highly likely that Tikalie and Samantha called Lumina like that because of her challenging personality, or because she was a mysterious sea witch from Nerland. As a trivia, Maxine Foti got the inspiration for the nickname “edgy kid” from one of her friends.

Mara – Agony Aunt

Agony Aunt is a funny yet weird nickname. In general, an Agony Aunt is a term used to describe a columnist or writer who provides advice and guidance to readers who write in with their personal problems or concerns.

It’s typically a woman who specializes in offering advice on a range of topics that are relevant to women, such as relationships, careers, health, and family issues. She usually has experience and expertise in these areas and uses her knowledge to provide practical and thoughtful advice to readers who are struggling with their problems.

Readers can submit their questions or problems to the Agony Aunt, and she will respond with advice that is tailored to their specific situation. The Agony Aunt’s role is to provide a listening ear, offer support, and help readers find solutions that work for them.

Poseyda, Elena, and Thalassa jokingly call Mara that because she always gives advice to them. Fun fact, Maxine Foti herself was called an agony aunt by her childhood friend, thus the inspiration.

Hiset – Miss Trouble Personified

Hiset is a character in a story collection which has been given the nickname “Miss Trouble Personified.” The nickname’s ideator was Setenet, the son of the regent. This nickname suggests that Hiset is often involved in or causes trouble and that this aspect of her personality is prominent and well-known to those around her.

It’s not clear if this nickname has caught on with other characters in the collection or if it’s just something that Setenet uses to refer to Hiset. Do you think she is cool with it? Would you?

Neylan – Octopus

Setenet is known for being mischievous, and in his informal conversation with Nubia (the same one where he called Hiset Miss Trouble Personified), he called Neylan an Octopus. This isn’t truly a nickname but rather an expression of his frustration with her infatuation and the persistent pursuit of him.

Setenet felt overwhelmed and suffocated by Neylan’s attention, which was why he chose the metaphor of an octopus to describe her behavior. An octopus has multiple arms that can wrap around and cling to objects, which could symbolize how Neylan is clinging to Setenet and not allowing him any space or freedom. So, calling Neylan “octopus” in a conversation with Nubia was a way for him to vent his frustration and blow off steam without directly confronting Neylan or hurting her feelings.

However, it’s important to note that using derogatory nicknames to refer to someone is not an appropriate way to express anger toward them, and it’s important to communicate in a respectful and constructive manner.

Sawa & Mewa – Mewunia & Sawunia

The use of nicknames can be a powerful way to communicate affection and closeness, but it can also reveal deeper dynamics in relationships. In the case of Sawa’s mother calling her “Sawunia,” it’s possible that the nickname is not used to express affection but rather to convey a more patronizing attitude of her mother towards Sawa.

While the nickname itself may sound endearing, the context in which it is used can alter its meaning. In this case, the nickname may be intended to highlight that Sawa’s mother believes her to be childish and immature and consider their interaction frustrating.

On the other hand, Sawa’s use of the nickname “Mewunia” for her younger sister Mewa seems to be rooted in a genuine expression of affection. Unlike her mother’s use of “Sawunia,” which may have a more negative connotation, Sawa’s use of “Mewunia” appears to reflect her fondness for her sister.

The nickname may be a playful and endearing twist on Mewa’s name, which could suggest that Sawa sees Mewa as a unique and cherished individual.

Interestingly, while Sawa is a Polish name, Mewa is not. It is, though, a Polish word for the seagull. The diminutive form of this word, mewa, would be mewka. However, Mewka doesn’t sound great for a nickname… And Sawa, as a name, doesn’t have a popular diminutive form; it is a rare name. Thus, nicknames Sawunia and Mewunia are actually derived from the diminutive form of the Polish name Ewa – Ewunia.
