Hiset Imhotep is a character from Mermaid Princess Amelia fantasy series by Maxine Foti. She made her first appearance in the “Stories from the Undersea World of Mermaid Princess Amelia,” but was also briefly mentioned (without the name) in “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony.”
Hiset is the current mermaid pharaoh of the Lotus State. Being two years older than Nubia, she’s seventeen years old at the beginning of their story and eighteen years old in “…The Lost Symphony.”
Hiset was described as a feminine mermaid with dark hair, and brown eyes lined with kohl. Due to her function, she was typically seen wearing pharaoh robes and their characteristical headdresses. Because she is from the Lotus State, her tail has an intense blue shade.
Hiset is well-educated in philosophy and rhetoric, and can always make a good impression on others. However, she doesn’t consider herself to be a good fit for a pharaoh, and wishes that her brother would take that role instead. And this is because, Hiset’s true personality just doesn’t fit what’s expected from her. She’s very extraverted, spontaneous and fun-loving, which sometimes makes her act irresponsibly and need help.
Hiset is overly dependent on her lady in waiting (and highest priestess of the Lotus State) Nubia Khaled. Whenever there’s trouble, she calls for Nubia’s help.
The two seem to be best friends but over time it quickly turns that their friendship is based on a rather wobbly foundation. First of all, they are complete opposites in terms of character, and second, the friendship worked only as long as Nubia was willing to compromise her needs and wants. When Nubia decided to change patrons to tap into her own power, Hiset turned against her. Even though she later apologized, Nubia still left the country, upset.
Hiset’s second important friend, one more suited to her, is Neylan Turkuaz, mermaid princess from the Turquoise Ravines. She visited her once in Nakht-Ankh.
Due to her royal function, Hiset knew both the regent of Nakht-Ankh and his son, Setenet. She didn’t have a good opinion on Setenet, thinking that he was exaggerating in his attempts to win Nubia’s attention. However, she still partied with him and her older brother, Hamset (and Neylan, and Nubia).
Little is known about Hiset’s parents and grandparents. From the descriptions available, her parents seem strict. They certainly don’t tolerate her escapades to nightclubs, and other mischief. Hiset also has a grandmother, but the woman doesn’t seem different from her parents. Hiset seems just as afraid of her, as of the rest of her family, which can be seen when she begs for Nubia’s help with the lost cobra staff.
Hiset loved clubbing, and her two favorite nightclubs were the underground catacombs and the sunken spaceship. She was, however, very afraid of extraterrestrials and always spoke about them, whenever anyone mentioned going on land.
Another hobby of Hiset was shopping for expensive things and gifts. She shared this hobby with Neylan.
