All 5 Swimming Styles with their descriptions: Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Sidestroke

Swimming is an aquatic sport where competitors use their limbs to propel themselves through the water. It is an essential skill: not just for survival in the water but also for recreation and exercise. For some, it is even a profession!

Suppose you want to learn how to swim well. In that case, you first need to ensure that you feel at ease in the water and have reasonable buoyancy control, so you can efficiently swim using both strokes and kicks.

5 Swimming Styles with their descriptions

  • Freestyle
  • Backstroke
  • Breaststroke
  • Butterfly
  • Sidestroke

Freestyle: Some call this swimming style the front crawl, which is considered the most classic swimming posture since it is the style that feels most natural. To swim, propel yourself forward at a moderate speed and move in an exact direction. While on your stomach, make a windmill motion alternating the movements of your arms and gently fluttering the legs. The technique makes it possible to swim further without tiring as quickly. In some swimming strokes, the swimmer’s head is entirely underwater. Therefore, they must maintain complete control of their breathing, which can be tiring. But freestyle doesn’t require it.

Its advantages include:

  • Being the fastest and most effective swimming stroke.
  • Being able to cover long distances with little energy.
  • Helping build muscles and endurance.
  • Giving the body a complete workout.

The disadvantage is coordinating between strokes and breathing. This may be somewhat difficult for beginners.

Backstroke: This style is quite similar to freestyle, except one swims on their back and propels themselves backward. This technique entails floating on one’s back while simultaneously flapping one’s legs and rotating one’s arms like a windmill. The advantage is that it helps strengthen one’s core muscles and hip flexibility and improves one’s posture. The main disadvantage is the uncertainty of not knowing what is going on since one is on their back during the stroke. Medics recommend the style to those with backache problems.

Breaststroke: To swim with this particular style, one must float on one’s stomach with the face down and then start moving the arms in a half-circular motion in front of the body. To propel yourself upward and forward, bend your legs and kick back at the right moment. This serves as an excellent workout for those swimming for cardio exercise. Its benefit is that it helps tone the chest muscles and hamstrings; hence it’s considered a good workout.

Butterfly: This technique is a great way to get in shape and is often used in competitive swimming. To move oneself forward, one raises one’s arms above one’s head and then dives into the water. The legs remain close together and kick in unison while the body bobs up and down, mimicking a dolphin’s tail.

Sidestroke: This is a recommended survival technique used by lifeguards because, using this stroke, they can cling to another person and maintain them above water as they swim. To swim like this, recline on your side and scissor your legs to push yourself forward. Swap between bringing your hands together in front of your chest and shooting your arms out in front and behind you. This method is a great leg workout for the legs since they do most of the propulsion.
