What is International Plastic Bag Free Day?
International Plastic Bag Free Day, celebrated on July 3, is a day that encourages people to live without plastic bags. It’s also an opportunity for more people to learn about the environmental implications of plastic bags.
What is the problem with plastic bags, actually?
Plastic bags are one of the most common pollutants in our oceans. They are not biodegradable and often get mistaken for food by marine life and sea animals. A lot of the time, these animals swallow the plastic bag and die because it can cause them to suffocate or starve to death. To that, plastic bags cause other problems, such as clogging up drains and waterways, which creates problems for humans working by the seas or rivers.
Why do we still use plastic bags, then?
Many people consider plastic bags more convenient and cheaper. For example, as you go grocery shopping, you don’t have to worry about returning home to take your cloth bag. Similarly, you don’t have to worry about running out of space in your cloth bag, if you know, you can always get another plastic bag. But this only encourages you to spend more – and all those plastic bags that you throw away won’t disappear; they remain on the planet, polluting it.
Is switching from plastic bags to paper bags a good idea, then?
Not really; paper bags have a lot of issues as well, unfortunately. They do not decompose easily, and sometimes create a barrier to recycling. International Plastic Bag Free Day is a global campaign to raise awareness about the environmental impact of plastic bags.
How to Celebrate International Plastic Bag Free Day?
If you want to celebrate International Plastic Bag Free Day, start by sharing your plastic bag free pledge on social media! Subsequently, refuse any plastic bags offered by shopkeepers or cashiers.
