In the last article, we talked about the five types of colorful freshwater fish that you can keep in an aquarium, as well as about other marine animals that may inhabit the same environment. Today – for a slight change – we will come back to the topic of the terrarium and talk about 5 water-loving reptiles and amphibians that you can keep. Check it out!
AQUATIC TURTLES: Turtles are the perfect pets for a terrarium or, better said, an aquaterrarium, since most turtle species need water to swim in (to exercise and feel at home) as well as some small land area to dry off and get some sun, if they need it. Aquatic turtles are very cool pets. They don’t need too much food and, of course, are always very calm. The most fun thing about having a turtle is observing their lifestyle. They can be delightful companions.
IGUANAS: Iguanas are one of the most spectacular pets you can find. They will spend most of their time resting or eating, although on very hot days – or if they feel threatened – they will want to take a dip into the water. They are really cool pets that love fruits and vegetables, and will enjoy a living space with tall climbing plants and adequate light and humidity. The most incredible thing about them is their size – young ones are barely a few centimeters tall, yet as they grow they can reach almost two meters! It is like having a dinosaur at home, although, one that’s quiet and harmless. Make sure though that it has enough space to be comfortable.
FROGS AND TOADS: These amphibians are ideal pets for a terrarium, especially, if you don’t have much space to offer. There are many species of both frogs and toads, for example, aquatic frogs (such as the huge bullfrogs weighing almost a kilo) and tree frogs, such as the red-eyed green frogs. Being amphibians, frogs will always need water and sufficient humidity to feel good and grow healthy. It can be a lot of fun to watch them sing, swim and jump. Be careful though not to buy any poisonous species! Typically, the most colorful ones are the most venomous.
SALAMANDERS: Although they look like colorful lizards, salamanders are more closely related to frogs and just like frogs, are amphibians, so they need water and land in their own space to feel at home. They are very beautiful and interesting creatures, with nocturnal habits. They do not eat much – about two or three times a week at most – and feed on insects, worms, and snails. Etc. Their shiny black skin dotted with yellow speckles gives them a leopard’s splendor.
AXOLOTLS: This animal is an endangered species, so before acquiring one, it is important to make sure you can. If you obtain permission, wonderful! These are wonderful terrarium animals. Milky white, with a long tail and colorful red gills looking like the ones of a mermaid. The Axolotl is a type of salamander, but it deserves its own section in this article, because of its incredible appearance. Axolotls are aquatic habitants most of the time, so they will need plenty of water and also plants to feel safe and comfortable. They almost never go out on land, but they need it from time to time, so it would be appropriate to make them a small ramp to go out and rest from swimming for a while.
