Making a terrarium is not too different from making an aquarium. In both cases it’s important to dedicate attention and care to create the right habitat for the animals and plants that will occupy it, as a terrarium is a mini ecosystem that requires certain conditions to function.
The first step to setting a terrarium is to choose the right container. One large enough so that the plants can grow freely in it, and that the animals inhabiting it have enough room to move around.
It is not essential that this container is made of glass – there are those with wooden walls, for example – but it is highly recommended that at least one of its sides is transparent. As for the shape, there are many: from simple, box-shaped ones, to small bottles. For starters, we recommend a box-shaped terrarium – it will be easier to manage.
The bottom of your terrarium will need some gravel, activated carbon and – above all – soil. But not just any soil – pay attention that the soil you’re choosing is suitable for plants, full of nutrients and that it has just the right humidity levels. This is crucial to the wellbeing and happiness of the animal which will live in your terrarium.
Just like in the case of an aquarium, it is not advisable to place the terrarium near a window, since too much sunlight could have negative effects on the animals. Instead, try to choose a place where there won’t be sudden changes in temperature. Also, make sure to pick a quiet space, so that noise won’t scare the terrarium’s inhabitants.
Last but not least, knowledge about the requirements of a particular species is important, too. Not all plants need the same levels of light, the same fertilizer types, or to be watered with the same frequency – and same goes for animals, they all have different requirements. It is not the same to build a terrarium for a reptile such as a gecko or an iguana, as it is for a guinea pig. The animals will need a shelter inside the terrarium to satisfy their need for security.
Setting a terrarium is one of those things that seem daunting at first but when you do it once, it becomes much easier – and the animals will surely feel thankful for all the effort, time, and care put into your little terrarium!
