The basics of setting up an aquarium at home

Written by Merman Moises

Setting up an aquarium is an exciting task, which will give you many mood benefits, such as helping to combat stress, anxiety or depression, among others. But setting up an aquarium is not just about putting fish, sand and water in a glass box. It actually requires a lot of work, care and attention.

First of all, you should choose a suitable size for the tank, as the fish will need space to swim and move around. The location matters, too. A window or a hallway, for example, aren’t good places. In the first case the sunlight could affect the fishes’ body temperature by overheating the water on certain days, and in the second case, of the hallway, there could be too much noise scaring your sea animals. Remember that for them, quietness equals safety.

The bottom base of the tank is important for the well-being of the fish, as well. It is best to make it of gravel, as sand, being too light, can be harmful to the fish. It clouds the water as they move, and makes it more challenging for you to clean the tank.

As for decoration, buy only ones especially meant to be put in aquariums. Try to avoid putting random objects inside, as the paint, laquer, or metal element may make your fish sick. Instead, go to a pet shop and look for tropical roots, vases, logs, large stones or split coconuts. These will be an excellent decoration, and a refuge for the more timid fish.

Remember, too, that not all fish are comfortable in the same type of water. Some species prefer salty water while others prefer fresh water. A good aquarium will also need its own light source to keep it warm, plants so that fish feel at home, and, first and foremost, a good filter and an oxygen generator. The filter will keep the water as clean and fresh as possible, while the oxygen generator will keep it oxygenated.

Having said all this, you already know that owning an aquarium is a big responsibility. With this in mind, inform yourself well before purchasing one. You may want to look for books about aquariums, or even contact somebody who’s had an aquarium for a while already. It’s always a good idea to have someone knowledgeable and experienced to call, in case you have doubts.
