In Greek mythology, there are many water-themed names that can be used for girls. Some of these names are connected to the sea goddesses and water nymphs, and as such, they make wonderful baby names. Others will be a better fit for fictional characters or villains, as they may be related to sea monsters. 5. Atlanta – This name will be easily associated with the Atlantic Sea or Atlantis, but in reality, it means “immovable.”
6. Bethesda – The name Bethesda is of Greek-Armeic origin, and means “flowing water.”
7. Calypso – Nowadays, most people may associate this name with Afro-Caribbean Dance, but it originally described a nymph that delayed Odysseus’ return home. Interestingly, it’s also related to the research ship belonging to Jacques Cousteau.
8. Ceto – This name means “goddess of the ocean” and Calypso as a character from Greek mythology ruled over monsters, whales, sharks.
9. Delphine – This name is almost instantly associated with the dolphins, because, delphin means “dolphin” in French, however, the origin of this name is actually Greek, and it was related to the city of Delphi.
10. Doris – Doris is yet another name meaning “goddess of the sea” and in the mythology, she was the mother of the nereids.
11. Eidothea – Eidothea was a sea nymph and the mother of Proteus. It’s one of less popular names, but definitely a beautiful one.
12. Hydra – The name “Hydra” means “water” and is associated with the three-headed monster, so you may not necessarily want to call your daughter like that. However, it’s a fantastic name for the sea villain (or at least, a mean girl) in your mermaid novel!)
13. Leukothea – Leukothea is a gracious name meaning “sea goddess.” She was the one who assisted sailors in the open seas.
14. Minthe – Minthe was a sea nymph that was later turned into the mint plant. The name isn’t very well known,m but it’s beautiful nevertheless.
15. Naiade – The name Naiade means “water nymph”
16. Nerida – Similarly to Naiade, Nerida also denotes a “sea nymph”
17. Nerissa – Nerissa is a dark and mysterious name meaning “of the sea”
18. Pelagia – Pelagia is yet another name meaning “of the sea.” She and Nerissa could be perfect sisters!
19. Poseida – This name, is actually the female form of the name Poseidon. The version written with “y,” Poseyda, became popular thanks to the eccentric character from “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” by Maxine Foti.
20. Sirene – It would be hard to find a more mermaid related name than “Sirene,” but did you know that it actually means “enchantress”?
21. Skylla – Skylla was a sea goddess, although, a dangerous one. You may choose this name for a strong novel heroine that’s not afraid of anything.

23. Thalassa – Thalassa means “person who loves the sea,” and it’s very popular among scuba divers.
24. Xanthe – Xanthe was the name of an oceanid, who was the daughter of Tethys and Oceanus.
25. Xenia – This sweet name means actually “hospitable” so you may associate it with Edith (Mermaid from the Black Sea), but it also describes a coral which makes it a perfect mermaid name!
