I gave you some days off, but now it’s time to get back to threads, beads and needles, my friends! The dream catcher is a very popular ethnic item, known for its important role in Native American cultures, where its function is to serve as a protective amulet for children and the elderly.
Its original name, which means spider, goes hand in hand with its aesthetic, elegant and at the same time mysterious design, consisting of a ring with a net in the center, from which feathers and other protective symbols hang. As you may already know, this amulet is intended to capture bad dreams (or good ones, depending on the source) to improve the dreamer’s sleep quality.
Making one of these charms, which shine thanks to their aesthetic value, is much easier than it seems. First of all, you will need to find a ring which will be your base, a feat that has many ways in which it can be achieved. You can do it with a tin wire – it will be sufficiently malleable, but also solid and firm. The circle doesn’t have to be perfect, but it is be advisable to fold the wire several times so that the final result makes a solid circle. Don’t worry if it looks b bad, we’ll take care of it right away.
Use a woolen thread to make multiple wraps all around the hoop. Now, wire edges shouldn’t be visible anymore. Tie the end of the woolen thread around the bottom, so that the knot can be easily hidden by decorations that we will attach to the hoop later. At this point, feel free to attach a loop from another thread, or elastic, at the top of your dreamcatcher. You will use it to hand the decoration, so make sure that it’s properly attached! Dreamcatchers can be heavy, if they’re loaded with accessories.
Moving on to the next step, now we need to make the net. The threads should point to the center and gather into a small object in the center, such as a ring, although you can use a seashell, a starfish, or a large, colorful bead. I think that the bead is the most common option. If you have no idea how to weave a net, no worries, there are countless youtubers showing how they do it, simply type “how to weave a dreamcatcher net” in the search box.
The final step is to include the objects that will hang from the hoop. Conventional dream catchers are adorned with pompoms or feathers and, although you don’t have to give them up, we recommend you use sea-themed decorations instead. You learned earlier how to make bracelets, use the same tutorial to create strings of beads. You can also attach shells and starfish at the bottom for a more oceanic effect.
As an icing on the cake, you can scent the woolen threads with a dot of the scented candles we learned to make. The wind will bring the pleasant aroma and the lulling sound of shells and feathers will help you calm down even on the most stressful days!
