5 non-fish marine animals to keep in an aquarium

In the previous article, we talked about 5 types of freshwater fish, and today we will discuss 5 equally interesting sea animals that can also inhabit our aquarium. Of course, not all of them together – each requires different conditions, besides, some species can fight each other (and you surely don’t want to have Great Aquarium Wars in your tank!).

Ready to dive in? Put on your scuba mask and let’s go.

THE RED-EARED SLIDER: This charismatic little animal got its name after the red lines on its head, and is sometimes nicknamed the Japanese Turtle. These turtles are aquatic creatures and, although they can spend the whole day swimming, they won’t miss an opportunity to take a sunbath to keep warm.  They measure about 20 centimeters, although in certain cases, they can grow larger. Typically, females tend to be larger than males. These lovely tortoises are one of the world’s most popular pets, and can live for many years, 35 to 40 years at times! They’re ideal if you want a long term tenant.

THE GHOST SHRIMP: also called glass shrimp, is one of the most interesting options to introduce in an aquarium. These intriguing crustaceans have a transparent body with visible organs (the main characteristic to which they owe their name), and are almost 10 centimeters long, when they reach adulthood. They are not very difficult to care for and feed. They are very serene and, as long as not too many are placed in a very small space, they don’t become aggressive and share their habitat happily with other fish or shrimps. They feed on everything: vegetables, meat, carrion, frozen food, algae…  Anything that fits into their small jaws.

THE MARINE SNAIL: Marine snails can be very varied: they come in several shapes and colors, but they share certain characteristics. Many have gills that allow them to breathe underwater and their colorful shells, usually spiral-shaped, make them truly unique in their class. They come in various sizes, from small as a pencil rubber to the size of a small dog pup. They are quiet, and ideal aquarium inhabitants.

THE CHRISTMAS RED ISLAND CRAB: This peculiar guest is one of the many species of crayfish that exist, but it has certain features which make it special. Its body is more robust than elongated, with a heart shape and huge red claws, which are usually larger in males than in females. It remains a fact, though, that these crabs are very small, no more than five centimeters and, unlike most crayfish, they are inveterate adventurers. They need room to roam and explore to their heart’s content, otherwise, they will be unhappy. Be careful though not to leave anu outlets in the aquarium, otherwise, they may escape. Otherwise, they are quiet and easy to feed.

THE RED CLAW CRAB: This type of crab can be described as a shy and versatile warrior. Its size and shape can be very varied, but it typically has an elongated body similar to that of a lobster, and can measure almost up to 18 cm! It’s extremely resistant and adaptable, living mostly a nocturnal lifestyle, and feeding on anything – like most college students, yeah? Jokes apart, it feeds on plants, meat, fish, fish food, carrion… It even eats its old skin after molting! It typically spends time among rocks, or hiding in their burrow, however, just like their friend Christmas Red Island Crab, it can be adventurous enough to try to leave the aquarium so… watch out for these mischievous escapees!

Which species out of the four described above – turtles, shrimps, snails and crustaceans – sounds like your new perfect aquarium tenant? Let us know in the comment section below!
