Davika Thani in “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony”
Name: Davika Thani
Birthday: ???
Age: 16 years old.
Occupation: first and most important lady-in-waiting of the Thai Pearl Empire, high school student in Santa Ana.
Looks as human: Davika is described in the novel as a beautiful, dark-skinned girl with naturally bright hair. When Amelia first meets her, she dresses in a rather girly manner: elegant blouse and tulip skirt. The colors she seems to prefer, are white and beige.
Looks as mermaid: Her tails resembles the one of a Moorish idol. It’s lemon with a silverly glow, and she’s got characteristical, horizontal stripes. Because of her very small caudal fin, she swims slowly.
Personality: Davika is a complex character and one of the few, Amelia considers completely irritating and has trouble dealing with. What irritates her the most, is that Davika’s confidence, and her desire to be the group’s leader. Davika often acts as if she’s the most important in the group, and does everything to win attention, sometimes, resorting to dirty ways such as undermining other people’s good relationships. When Amelia showed up in the group, Davika seemed very mistrustful of her. She asked countless questions, which Amelia found annoying. When talking to her, Amelia felt out of place.
Davika is extremely fast to judge, accuse, and humiliate her. She’s the foil character of her best friend, Edith, who’s reflective, understanding, and forgiving. Davika definitely likes those traits, and she’s also capricious and impatient. She wants everything to happen now and doesn’t like waiting. When waiting for Sawa to open the door, she rings the bell countless times. She’s fast with everything, which is also probably the reason why she reaches erroneous conclusions, as an amateur sleuth and ruins her own credibility.
Even though there’s the stereotype that most Asians avoid touch, Davika seems to be the opposite. She breaches other people’s personal space. She grabs Amelia’s wrist on one occasion and on the other, she pushes the book into her hands. Amelia, who was “handled like glass” by everyone else, and frowned when even Edith hugged her, definitely hated Davika’s style of being.
And last but not least, Davika has no problem, to offend someone, like when she called Amelia and her sister “sea trash.”
It looks like, Davika is the bully of the group, and only Amelia’s arrival stopped her from bossing around more. When Edith stops hanging out with Davika, so does Nubia.
Interests: Not much is known about Davika’s likes and dislikes. For sure, she loves being at the center of attention, and spending time with her boyfriend, Luiz. Davika doesn’t enjoy bothanical gardens and walking, as she gets cramps. She seems to like music, she went to see the oriental performance with opera diva Garabel, and when she’s annoyed, she simply listens to her MP3 on headphones.
Family: Davika has both parents. Her father travelled to the Gulf of Carpentaria from which he had brought the conch which was their family’s artefact. It’s not explained, though, what the conch was doing in there. Davika’s mother, on the other hand, is the empress of the Thai Pearl Empire. However, Davika is not going to rule the country, she’s just a lady-in-waiting. The true candidate to throne, is her first cousin, the daughter of her mother’s sister Kamon Thani. In Thai Pearl Empire, only one woman can be the empress. Since her mother was it, now, it’s time for her sister’s daughter. Davika thinks that this is fair and doesn’t seem to mind. Another family member of Davika that was mentioned, was Niran Thani. He lives somewhere in Portugal, but it’s unclear, where. As for Davika’s aunt, Kamon, the woman was a famous military strategist that had died in the mausoleum of Lost Symphonies. Davika cared a lot about her, and later, grieved her death alone.
Best friends: At the beginning of the novel, it looks like Davika and Edith are best friends. They hang out quite often, and trust each other. When Edith’s apartment was robbed, Edith asks Davika for help. However, when Edith and Amelia fight, Edith turns away from Davika, and decides not to trust her judgment. Instead, she decides to make up with Amelia, and she takes her side. She tells Amelia, being friends with Davika is going to be a challenge and that Davika may “not forgive there.” This points to the fact that there was strife between them earlier. Edith never told Davika that she was in love with Jet Mir, but Davika figured it out. She also opposed giving their artifacts to him, which in the end, ruined Edith’s relationship. Even though it looks like Edith doesn’t have a grudge about it, Davika drifts apart from Edith, after she had made up with Jet Mir. There’s no mention of any big quarrel, but in the last scene, Davika grieves alone and isn’t consoled with Edith, who’s with Jet Mir and Amelia. This indicates huge problems in their friendship.
Davika was also friends with Mewa. When Jet Mir staged the kidnapping of Mewa, Davika turned against him, and she trusted that Sawa (who’s Mewa’s sister), was also against him. Because of this, she trusted everything that Sawa would say, not realizing, that Sawa and Mewa both had a pact with Jet Mir. Sawa is the only one who can successfully dispell Davika’s doubts about Amelia. And later, as Sawa got sick after catching variegated perch rash, we also learn that Davika took care of her.
Some other characters Davika appeared to have a good relationship with, are Nubia and Poseyda. She’s also protective of other people, such as for example her brother, or Garabel (that she barely knows!). This shows, Davika is always trying to act like a leader, and help others, and do the thing that she considers most right, even though sometimes, she’s not really right.
Also, the fact that Davika refused to help everyone was related to the fact that she wanted to save everyone, which shows once again, she’s a loyal friend, only one, who’s controlling, and struggling to keep everything together.
Love interest: Davika dates Luiz Lomba, who’s in the same high school. Amelia describes him as tall, blond, and with prominent jaw. He had some mild speech disorder. It looks like they have a good relationship with each other.

In Davika’s Story
Davika Thani is the central protagonist of the story, a fifteen-year-old mermaid princess of the Thai Pearl Empire whose journey navigates the turbulent waters of family duty, personal ambition, fractured friendships, and the terrifying dawn of romantic awareness. She is a character of striking contrasts: strong-willed yet vulnerable, investigative yet emotionally avoidant, and fiercely loyal while struggling to define her own identity outside the roles prescribed to her.
Physicality and Presentation
Davika is of “relatively short stature,” a trait she shares with her mother. She possesses “glowing cinnamon skin, sleek blond hair,” and “captivating olive-green eyes.” Her tail, like most merpeople from her empire, is genetically related to the Moorish idol fish. Her style is deliberately natural and understated, embracing a “natural look with mid-length hair, no make-up, and a simple sarong,” accessorized only with “flat, lacy golden bangles.” This simplicity stands in stark contrast to the bold fashions of her mother, Empress Pakpao, and her rival, Allison, reflecting a desire for authenticity and perhaps a rejection of the ostentatious trappings of her status.
Character and Inner World
Davika’s personality is a complex tapestry. She is intelligent, observant, and possesses a “knack for focusing on details,” which serves her well in her unofficial sleuthing. This analytical nature is paired with a strong will and a touch of arrogance, as seen when she introduces herself to Indah with emphasis: “Yes, it’s Davika Thani… The one and only Davika Thani.” She is quick-witted and sharp-tongued, readily trading barbs with her arch-enemy, Allison.
Beneath this confident exterior, however, lies a deep-seated anxiety, particularly regarding romance. At fifteen, she is “genuinely afraid of the opposite gender.” The story states explicitly that “the thought of being in a relationship was way too daunting for her at that stage, and it really spooked her. Any form of physical contact beyond a casual, friendly hug, or holding hands, made her anxious, and the idea of being kissed disgusted and terrified her.” This fear dictates her actions, leading her to prefer the safety of living vicariously through her friends’ romantic exploits rather than confronting her own feelings.
Her greatest aspiration is to break free from the confines of her duty. She dreams of owning a “tailor studio which was would also serve as her secret detective bureau,” combining her passion for fashion design with her innate investigative skills. This dream highlights her desire for autonomy and a life built on her own terms, not her birthright. She feels like a “prisoner” to her role, a sentiment she shares with her friend Kleun, “eagerly awaiting the day they could break free from their duties, and pursue their true aspirations.”
Family Dynamics: A Tapestry of Tension and Devotion
- With Empress Pakpao Thani (Mother): Davika’s relationship with her mother is fraught with friction and a fundamental mismatch in personalities. Pakpao is self-centered, dramatic, and dismissive, turning every conversation back to herself and showing clear disinterest in Davika’s “feelings and thoughts.” Davika feels a “secret relief” that her mother is still present, unlike her aunt, but their interactions are marked by frustration. She groans at her mother’s sudden topic shifts and is irritated by her nagging. Pakpao’s casual racism about Wan’s fiancé and her disregard for the gravity of Kamon’s disappearance upset Davika deeply. Yet, there is a underlying, unshakeable loyalty; Davika loves her mother, even if she feels misunderstood by her.
- With Niran (Older Brother): Davika shares a comfortable, teasing, and pragmatic relationship with Niran. She is initially “irritated” by her mother’s constant questions about him and claims no interest in his affairs. However, on land, their bond is evident. She finds “peculiar comfort in his imperfect presence,” describing him as “light-hearted, detached, and pragmatic, providing a sense of security.” She is willing to advocate for his dream of reaching Silicon Valley, showing sisterly support despite being bewildered by his choice to live in “insect”-ridden Bangkok. Their dynamic is one of familiar squabbling—her disgust at his dirty sock is palpable—but also of unspoken understanding and solidarity as the two younger generation figures trying to carve their own paths away from their mother’s orbit.
- With Kamon Thani (Aunt): Davika’s most profound familial connection is with her missing aunt, Kamon. She feels “very close to that inspiring woman; closer than she felt to her mother.” She reflects that “she and her aunt would be a much better match as daughter and mother.” Kamon was a strict but immensely influential mentor to Davika, imparting lessons on discipline, excellence, and the price of greatness. It was Kamon who taught her that “the exceptional ones are always lonely” and that victory belongs to “doers,” not “talkers.” This mentorship forged a deep intellectual and emotional bond, making Kamon’s disappearance not just a family tragedy but a personal loss for Davika, fueling her determined investigation.
- With Wan (First Cousin): Davika’s relationship with Wan is the cornerstone of her emotional life. She is not only Wan’s “most important lady-in-waiting” but also her “most cherished confidante.” She loves Wan “deeply, almost like a real sister,” and is fiercely protective of her cousin’s vulnerable and gentle nature. Davika is Wan’s chief supporter, cheering on her engagement with enthusiastic, if teasing, fervor: “May they be filled with Mr. Elusive Heartthrob, twirling you around the dancefloor until all your pearl necklaces fall!” She instinctively shields Wan from harsh truths, such as the nightmare of the “Surreal Temple” and the grim discovery in Borneo, because she “couldn’t bear to cause Wan any distress.” This relationship defines one of her primary roles in the story: as Wan’s protector and pillar of strength.
Friendships and Rivalries: Affection, Betrayal, and Unrequited Love
- Indah: Davika shares a warm, easy-going friendship with Indah, the princess of the Java and Flores Seas. Their interaction is characterized by affectionate teasing and genuine care. Davika is “genuinely touched” by Indah’s gift of kue and is eager to catch up on her friend’s life. Their friendship is uncomplicated and joyful, a safe harbour from her other, more turbulent relationships.
- Allison: This relationship represents a profound betrayal and a source of lingering hurt. Davika was once “completely charmed” by Allison, admiring her confidence and aspiring to be like her. Their initial friendship was deep; Allison gave her bracelets, shared her address, and Davika “treasured every moment that they spent together.” However, Davika slowly discovered Allison’s “darker side”—her vanity, pettiness, and vengefulness. The friendship eroded under a “long series” of “gaslighting remarks” and “cunning comments,” which left Davika “uncomfortable” and questioning herself. The encounter at the summit reopens these wounds, and the subsequent discovery that Allison’s nation, the Coral Sea, was behind a scheme to sabotage her empire’s economy hardens her resolve: “she would never forgive Allison, not even, in a million years.”
- Brother Kleun Tale: This is the most complex and fraught relationship in Davika’s life. She initially seeks Kleun out for his psychic abilities to find Kamon, but they share a “special bond” as kindred spirits who feel trapped by their circumstances. They are both “prisoners” to their duties and bond over a shared love of cheap detective books. Davika feels deep “empathy” for him, perceiving his torment and wishing he had someone to love.
The relationship takes a dramatic turn when Davika, through a dream, becomes aware of Kleun’s secret, hopeless love for her. She hears his tormented thoughts: “I want you… It torments me so deeply… I want to plunge a knife into my heart and end this love with my life.” This revelation terrifies her, not because she is repulsed by him, but because it forces her to confront the romantic feelings she so deeply fears. She realizes that “deep in her heart, she felt that she liked him; and longed to be close to him, and hold his hand.” However, her terror of “anything more” causes her to flee, both emotionally and physically, to Lisbon. She is caught between her care for him and her own profound anxiety, unable to act on her feelings or even acknowledge them to him, creating a painful stalemate.
Likes, Dislikes, and Fears
- Likes: Davika enjoys crime and detective novels, which keep her “captivated and engaged.” She has a passion for fashion design, as evidenced by her dream of a tailor studio. She appreciates simple pleasures, like sharing snacks with Indah, indulging in coconut ice cream, and attending nang yai puppet theater. On land, she discovers a liking for the internet and Somchai’s crispy fried bananas.
- Dislikes: She holds a deep disdain for her rival, Allison, and the “cheap and tacky” products of the Coral Sea. She dislikes her mother’s frivolity and self-absorption. On land, she has a pronounced aversion to the chaos of human cities: “Insects! Garbage! Fumes! Vehicles! Street Lights! Electric sockets! All these things freak me out.” Bangkok’s traffic and cockroaches are particular nemeses.
- Fears: Her primary fear is romantic intimacy and physical contact. She is also afraid of the terrifying, surreal vision of her aunt’s fractured mind and the potential danger that may have caused it. The story opens with her general sense of unease, feeling that “reality might not be any better in so many aspects.”
Her Journey in the Story
Davika’s arc is one of investigation and emotional evasion. The story begins with her fulfilling a diplomatic duty at the STORM Summit, where she is preoccupied with thoughts of Wan and immediately confronted by Allison. Her primary mission becomes the search for her missing aunt, Kamon. This investigation is the through-line of her actions: she consults Kleun, bravely explores Kamon’s abandoned and ominous residence, travels to Bangkok to enlist her brother’s help, and pieces together clues from her friends’ discoveries in Borneo.
Simultaneously, she is on an unconscious emotional journey. The investigation forces her into closer contact with Kleun, which culminates in the shattering dream where she witnesses both his love and her aunt’s psychic disintegration. This dual revelation is too much for her to process. Faced with the weight of Wan’s potential distress, the horror of Kamon’s fate, and the terror of Kleun’s feelings, she chooses flight. Accompanying Niran to Lisbon is a tactical retreat, a “break from all the weighty matters,” demonstrating that for all her strength and investigative prowess, she is still a young teenager struggling to cope with the overwhelming complexities of her world. Her story is unfinished, leaving her at a crossroads between her duty to her family and her fear of her own heart.
