Sibling relationships have their ups and downs: one could compare them to a painting filled with lights, colors and unfortunately, also shadows. The tertiary characters from “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony,” twin brothers Taisuke and Hansuke, understand it more than anyone.

At first glance, they’re as similar as their names. Both are moderately tall young men, with dark hair (characterized by a subtle reddish glow), fair skin, and almond-shaped eyes. The greatest difference in their faces, is the color of their eyes: Hansuke’s are brown, and Taisuke’s – light blue. But that’s only the beginning of all differences between them.

First of all, there’s their attitude. Despite hardships, Taisuke is more serene. At first, he seems very quiet – to the point of being mysterious, actually! – but turns out to be nice and pleasant when you start to get to know him. Meanwhile, his brother Hansuke is a bit more apathetic, and cynical, becoming unpleasant to deal with, at times.

Second, unlike his brother, who is as human just as his father, Taisuke was born a merman. He inherited the right genes from his mother, a mermaid from Japan’s Inland sea, which once belonged to the feared and mysterious mermaid state, called the Sambath. Perhaps, the fact that the brothers aren’t equal, is the main cause of the quarrel between the two. It’s likely that Hansuke feels inferior or even envies Taisuke for being a triton.

Third, the brothers don’t even share same hobbies. Taisuke is a regular and dedicated practitioner of martial arts such as karate, an activity that keeps him in shape and allows him to interact with his friends, among them Jayden Katharos, who, besides being a friend, was his long time opponent allowing him to get the best of himself.

In contrast, Hansuke hates martial arts – and his twin for practicing them. Not much is known about him in the first novel about Mermaid Princess Amelia. What we do know, though, is that the has (or has borrowed?) a fish boat. He nearly risks his life, trying to find his girlfriend, Kamadia, with whom he is very much in love, to the point of getting depressed after she disappeared. It looks like, despite his sometimes arrogant demeanor, Hansuke is capable of liking, even loving someone. He probably cares a lot about Taisuke, too, even though, he won’t admit it. Taisuke, on the contrary, has no problem sharing that they have a bad relationship and that he’s looking for ways to improve it.

Hence, despite everything, it looks like the two brothers care for each other very much.

Will they manage to clarify their feelings and build a healthier and more sincere relationship? Time will tell… And hopefully, Amelia and Kamadia can help them a little bit in this daunting task!
