In mythology, mermaids are portrayed as quite powerful creatures. Beautiful and mystical, they may appear harmless, but there’s so much more to them than what meets the eye…

In “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” mermaids can be considered superhumans. Beyond breathing underwater and turning their tails into human legs, they have other abilities.

The first and most obvious one, is the beautiful and hypnotic voice. In “Mermaid Princess Amelia…” mermaids are capable of completely trapping the human senses! This ability, present in each and every one of their species, can sometimes be used as a weapon. We saw it used for hypnotizing people, making them either dizzy, or sleepy. Some mermaids, like Garabel Haldane, one of the most famous underwater opera divas of the Atlantic, use their powers to deeply enchant her audience during shows. But not all mermaids dedicate the beauty of their voice to the arts.

In ancient times many underwater communities, such as the mermaids of the Aegean Sea and other areas of classical Greece, used their voices to strand human ships and kill sailors, mainly to gain wood, am important resource which is, of course, scarce and nearly non-existent under the sea.

This practice has suffered some abandonment though, throughout the years, even though some mermaid states, e.g. Antemidia, maintain it by tradition.

Of course, there are also laws and rules regarding magical behavior. Amelia mentions that in the era of the sixth starfish, during the fourth stream (in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries of human history), the underwater countries found themselves in the grip of mass panic. The cause of it was human expansion overseas, which led many mermaid countries to ban the practice of magic. The rulers made this choice for fear of attracting people’s attention and getting their kingdoms discovered.

As a result of the draconian rule, many magical abilities were lost over time. But several mermaids locked their energetical powers into various containers. In Antemidia, this energy was stored in tiny crystal balls.

However, some mermaid communities, such as for example Nerland, dark county located in the Baltic Sea, never stopped practicing magic.

The castle of the Mond family in Düsterburg, the former capital of Nerland, is an example of a city where magic makes part of everyone’s daily life. Long-time dead flowers planted in the castle parks are still intact. They are probably preserved by the magic of one of the merpeople who have lived in the court with Lumina Mond: Amelia’s sister and one of the most powerful witches of the sea, whose powers include the ability to control undersea flora by simply focusing her mind and moving her hands.

Speaking of sea witches, we can’t ignore Kamadia, the mermaid princess of the Kingdom of One Thousand Jewels. She’s capable of performing complicated energy rituals. This power let her save the life of Leticia Alvarez, whose life energies were drained by the ancient demon named Kolthida. Kamadia, along with the princesses Leticia Alvarez of the Gulf of Mexico, Devi Raisa of the Sunda Trench, and Saliffa Hatim of the Red Sea, is spiritually linked to the four lost notes, which create symphonies that have healing and life-saving effects.

With all this having been said, there’s surely much more magic in the undersea world of “Mermaid Princess Amelia.” Hopefully, we can learn more about it in the next books of the series!
