Amun Khaled (Mr. Khaled) is a character from Mermaid Princess Amelia fantasy series by Maxine Foti. He made his first appearance in the “Stories from the Undersea World of Mermaid Princess Amelia.”
Amun Khaled is an adult merman from the Lotus State. He is the father of Nubia and Nubhotep Khaled, and the husband of Nubemtekh Khaled.
Mr. Khaled was born in the Lotus State, but spent a vast part of his life living on land (hence his Arabic and not Ancient Egyptian surname). He speaks perfect Arabic and works as the curator of one of the Museums in Cairo. His job required him to be frequently sent with exhibits, to various sister museums in Italy, France, Spain and Portugal.
He tends to dress old-fashionately, and has pale skin (due to his life underwater), and obsidian eyes with a bluish sheen, hidden behind glasses.
His family life seems perfect, but there’s a dark story behind it. Since the love of his life, Nubemtekh, was already promised to another man, Mr. Khaled suffered from unrequited love. Heartbroken and hopeless, he kept praying to different gods (including his patron, goddess of truth and justice Ma’at), but in vain. Eventually, he invoked the feared, demonic god of storms and deserts, Seth.
When he arrived to his house in the lone oasis (probably connected to the Lotus State through the underground caves), it turned out that Seth had responded to his invocation and showed in the form of a violent storm. Mr. Khaled begged him then to shake his whole life from the ground so that he could forget about the heartbreak. Rather than do that, Seth left him an enigmatic message, saying, Mr. Khaled would win his beloved’s heart, but that their daughter would worship him in return.
After getting married, and getting a son (Nubhotep), Mr. Khaled had one more child with his wife, a daughter (Nubia). While some other parent would probably try to hide her from her fate, Mr. Khaled didn’t. He remained faithful to Seth, and never stopped praying to him, which scared his wife.
Despite her mother trying to shield her from the scary god, Nubia still became interested in him anyway, and eventually chose him as her patron. It’s highly likely that the two spoke about it when she moved to Portugal because she stated explicitly to her friend Setenet Akhenaten, that she was going there to talk to her father.
